Closing Your Cottage for Winter? Don’t Leave Pests the Keys. 🍂🔑

One last visit before winter? While you’re putting away the chairs and closing up, a few simple checks can make your cottage, detached garage or shed less inviting to mice.

✅ Take food, pet food and birdseed home—or keep anything that must stay in tightly closed, rodent-resistant containers. ✅ Check door corners, pipe gaps and damaged vent covers. Keep required ventilation and drainage openings clear. ✅ Look for fresh droppings or chewing before sealing gaps. If something may already be inside, get advice first.

Arrange an occasional check-in when it’s safe, especially after storms. A little attention now can help you spot problems before your next stay.

Hearing scrambling in the ceiling first thing in the morning? October is chewing season in Nova Scotia. Red and grey squirrels are choosing winter dens right now, and a warm attic, a quiet garage or a backyard shed looks like the perfect spot.

A quick way to tell who's up there: 🐿️ Squirrels: busy at dawn and dusk, louder running and rolling sounds 🐭 Mice: quiet scratching, mostly at night

Where they usually get in: gable and roof vents, soffit returns, gaps around the chimney, and tree branches that touch the roofline.

One important tip: don't just seal the hole. If a squirrel is still inside, it will chew a new way out — often through your siding or ceiling. Timing and a proper one-way exit matter.

The first cool nights are the starting gun for mice in Halifax homes.

A house mouse only needs a gap the width of a dime — about 6 mm. Dryer vents, sill plates, pipe entries and garage door corners are the usual ways in, and most homes have one to three of them.

You will almost always see the droppings before you see the mouse: dark, rice-sized, under the sink, in a drawer, along a baseboard.

Traps alone never finish the job. If the openings stay open, the next mouse simply walks in behind the last one. Seal first, then control.

🐝 Wasps — colonies are at their biggest and crankiest in September
🐭 Mice — a gap the size of a dime is all they need before the cold sets in

Those tiny flies in your kitchen? There are three different ones — and if you guess wrong, nothing you do works.

Fruit fly: stubby, tan, red eyes, hovering over the fruit bowl and the recycling. Fungus gnat: slender and dark, drifts up off the houseplant every time you water. Drain fly: fuzzy, moth-like, sitting perfectly still on the bathroom wall.

Fruit flies came home on the bananas — one female lays up to 500 eggs and, at Halifax summer temperatures, egg to adult is about eight days. Rinse every bottle and can before it hits the recycling bin (that's the most-missed source by far), refrigerate ripe fruit for 10 days, and they're gone in about a week. No spray can required.

Fungus gnats mean the plants are too wet. Drain flies mean there's slime film in a pipe — tape a piece of clear packing tape over the drain overnight, sticky side down, and whichever drain catches flies is your culprit.

August is peak flea month in Nova Scotia.

If you spotted your first flea of the year this week, you didn't do anything wrong. Eggs laid back in May, June and July are all hatching at once, and our 20–25°C humid summer runs the whole egg-to-adult cycle in about two to three weeks. A "sudden" infestation is really 8–12 weeks of quiet build-up.

The two-minute check: run a fine comb through your pet's coat over a sheet of white paper — base of the tail, belly, behind the ears. Live jumping specks are fleas. "Salt and pepper" specks that smear reddish-brown on a damp paper towel are flea dirt. That counts, even if you never see a flea. Find either one, call your vet the same day.

And if you don't have a pet? Something else is feeding them — nine times out of ten it's raccoons or skunks under a deck or shed, a feral cat in a garden bed, or squirrels in a soffit.
