A fire pit's a bit cheaper, quicker, and everybody can sit around itā€”and that's the appeal, and I get it. But you're sitting in whatever the weather's doing that night, and out here, it's usually rain.

A fireplace has a back and a chimney, so the smoke goes up instead of in your face. Plus, you can put a roof over it.

So, a fire pit if you're on a budget and it's mostly a summer thing. A fireplace if you want to use the space all year roundā€”and out here, that's the whole point.
