You could own a transformer vault and not even know it.

If your building has a grey padlocked door with a high-voltage sign on it, that room is likely a customer-owned vault.

Under Toronto Hydro's Conditions of Service, the transformers and switchgear inside are the property of the owner, not the utility.

Inspection, maintenance, repair, and replacement. All of it sits with you.

Here's the part that surprises people.

You can't just open the door and service it.

Toronto Hydro has to arrange access every time.

The work itself has to go to a contractor qualified to do it.

So a vault inspection isn't a work order you issue on a whim. It's a coordinated job.

That coordination takes weeks. Sometimes months on a large site.

That's why planned maintenance is always better and cheaper than waiting for something to break.

A planned entry is scheduled months out within your budget cycle and provides a condition report you can act on.

An emergency entry needs the exact same coordination, except now the building is dark while you arrange it, and you're paying emergency rates to do it.

In fleet electrification, what delivers greater returns and prevents losses?

Building redundancy in from the start.

A downed charger, a network outage, or even poor cell coverage at a new depot can quickly sideline your operations.

That’s why charging redundancy like backup hardware, multiple connectivity options, and a clear “Plan B” are essential to keep vehicles moving no matter what happens.

Redundancy is safeguarding uptime, protecting productivity, and keeping your commitments.

Before you install your first charger, speak with an expert who can anticipate potential failure points, build in the right redundancies, and design for maximum uptime, so your fleet spends less time waiting and more time on the road.

Can you spot the difference?

It's small, but it makes a big difference.

Look at the grommet, the collar where the cable exits the housing.

On the left, it's plastic. On the right, stainless steel.

That one part can be the difference between a retractor that lasts and one that fails.

Plastic gets cold. Cold plastic gets brittle. Brittle plastic cracks, and once it does, the cable has nothing to protect it at the highest-wear point of the entire assembly.

What follows is a chafed jacket, a broken retractor cable, a charging cable on the ground, and a service call nobody budgeted for.

You only know to look at the grommet if you've seen one fail.

That's what experience gets you.

Two lithium-ion battery fires in Toronto in 24 hours.

Fire Chief Jim Jessop is calling these the greatest evolving public fire safety risk in the country's largest city.

Join Mark Marmer on CBC Radio's Metro Morning tomorrow at 6:40 AM to talk about what buildings can do about it, and why planning is better than banning.

EV chargers get zero days off.

From blazing summers to freezing winters, EV chargers are out there every day keeping drivers and fleets moving. But like any technology, sometimes they need a little care.

Our team recently travelled to North Bay, ON to replace the HMI (Human-Machine Interface) or the screen that drivers rely on to interact with the charger. A small component, but a big role. Without it, the station can’t serve the community or keep EVs on the road.

It's crucial to ensure that charging infrastructure stays reliable, safe, and ready, because every minute of downtime matters for both individual drivers and businesses managing fleets.

At Signature Electric, we take pride in solving challenges like these, no matter the location. The EV future depends not only on building new infrastructure, but also on keeping it strong for the long haul.

The summer holidays are here, and so are the BBQs, parties, and plenty of food.

But all that celebration doesn't have to mean piles of single-use waste.

This summer, consider making reuse part of your festivities.

We partnered with Suppli for a company get-together, and it couldn't have been easier.

From delivery to return, the process was seamless, helping us celebrate without compromising our sustainability commitments.

Only 9% of plastic waste in Canada is actually recycled.

Suppli is tackling that problem by replacing disposables with durable, stainless steel containers designed to be reused hundreds of times.

Their system integrates directly with existing ordering platforms and includes convenient return bins, making it simple for people and businesses to do the right thing, even during the busy summer rush.

Whether you're planning an office summer party, a festive event, or a year-end celebration, Suppli makes it easy to keep sustainability at the heart of the season.

Here's to a greener summer!

Everything starts with a strong base.

That applies to EV chargers.

And it applies to the electrical contractor installing them.

The work people notice is the charger.

The work that makes it reliable starts beneath it, with planning, site prep, coordination, and properly built infrastructure from the ground up.

Reliable EV charging does not begin at the plug.

It begins at the base.
