We lost an amazing friend and client last week. It’s hard to find the right words when someone who shaped so much of what you believe in is no longer here.

Our family has had the privilege of building at Zajac Ranch over the years. Every time we arrived on the property, measured a log, drove a nail, raised a beam, we knew we were building something that mattered far beyond the structure itself. That was Mel’s doing.

Mel Zajac lost two sons. And instead of turning inward, he turned outward and built something that has given thousands of children their first real experience of belonging, joy, and the feeling that they are exactly where they’re supposed to be. That is an extraordinary human being.

To build alongside that kind of legacy, even in a small way, has been one of the honours of our work.

We sat on a bench at the Ranch not long ago and I asked him, Mel you're always happy, tell me your secret. He said "forgive those that hurt you and be kind". Simple yet strong words to live by.

We are sending every bit of love we have to his wife Wendy, to the Zajac family and he entire team at the Ranch, and to every camper and family who carries a piece of what Mel built inside them.

He was 98 years old and he never stopped giving and believing. Rest easy, Mel.

See that flare at the base of the log?

That's how a Western Red Cedar actually grows.

Wide where the trunk meets the roots, then tapering up.

Most builders cut it off as it's harder to work with.

We don't.

The flare is part of what gives a cedar home its character, and it's one of the things clients ask for by name.

You can't fake it or add it later, the log either has it or it doesn't.

That's why when you build a home with us we hand pick every log. If the flare isn’t just right, you can’t fix it later.

50 years of building log homes taught us one thing about wood selection.
Species matters more than almost anything else. Western Red Cedar for its natural oils and rot resistance. Douglas Fir for structural strength. Each one chosen for the climate and how the home will actually be used.
Get it wrong and you'll know about it in 10 years. Get it right and it outlasts you.

We built this one a few years back and it still stops us in our tracks.

5,520 sq.ft of round log post & beam in the foothills of the Rockies, just south of Golden, BC. Large diameter Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir throughout, including a custom main truss designed to mirror an actual local Douglas Fir tree.

Four bedrooms, five ensuites, and mountain views that do most of the talking.
