Before the furniture.
Before the landscaping.
Before the photos you save to your dream-home folder.

There’s this.

Dirt. Concrete. Logs. Machinery.
A whole lot of planning and a building that, for a while, requires a pretty good imagination.

Every finished home we share started somewhere much less glamorous.

And honestly, we LOVE this stage.

Because this is when something that has existed on paper starts becoming real.

This is what custom is supposed to mean.

Not choosing Option A, B or C from a catalogue.

Not building the same house in a different finish.

Custom means paying attention to the site, the people who will live there and the materials we have to work with. Then creating something that belongs to all three.

Sometimes that means an unusual log becomes the feature instead of being cut away.

Sometimes the view changes the entire plan.

Sometimes an idea evolves halfway through because we see an opportunity we couldn’t see on paper.

That’s the fun of building something once.

Apparently wood is back.

We weren’t aware it left.

Every log is a little different. The grain, shape and natural character all become part of the home, and that’s a big part of what makes timber homes feel the way they do.

We’re spending the weekend at the 127th Salmon Arm Fair!

Artisan has a tent and display set up, and we were also happy to donate the Western Red Cedar for two pro chainsaw carvers who will be carving live throughout the weekend.

A little progress update from Wisconsin.

This 5,800 sq. ft. log post and beam home has come a long way since it first arrived on site, and you can really start to see the home coming together now.

The exterior siding is going up, work is moving along inside, and there’s been plenty happening around the property too.

Still lots to come, but it’s always great to see one of our projects reach this stage.

A big shoutout to Kirk, Rick & Darla from D&L Timber Technologies for making the trip out to our facility to upgrade our D&L SP 1020 Ultra Electric sawmill.

They installed new lift pockets and added stronger cross bracing, making an already great machine even better and giving us upgrades that make a real difference in our day-to-day work.

We really appreciate the time, expertise and continued support from the D&L team. Thanks for making the trip!

There’s a lot more to renovating a log home than replacing a few logs.

On this Whistler project, we’re replacing undersized logs, wrapping new steel beams with large fir logs, and matching everything to a home that’s been standing for more than 30 years.

The best compliment? When you can’t tell which logs are new.

Thanks to Gavan Construction for having us on this one. Looking forward to showing more as the project comes together.
