It’s hard not to love this one.

It’s one thing to see where a project is going to be on a rendering, but it’s another thing to stand on the land and take it all in.

The foundation is in, and next spring we will be installing one of our custom cabin packages is here.

Really happy to see this one finished.

Set on an acreage in Maple Ridge, this timber frame home was built with a lot of space to slow down and enjoy it. Single-level living, big Douglas Fir timbers, a pool, covered outdoor areas, a gym and yoga room, media room, guest space… pretty much everything the homeowners wanted for how they live.

A lot of great work went into this one with Lacey Construction and Streamline Design, and it’s always rewarding to see a project come together like this.

Tasmania is officially on the list.

Josh was there last week for site visits, client meetings and contractor meetings as we work through the early planning for a new project.

This one will be a large, off-grid, generational log home designed around family time, homesteading, relaxing and entertaining.

We’re working alongside Kris Waldron of Guildsman Traditional, our Australian representative and General Contractor, as well as Streamline Design.

Still early days, but there’s a lot to be excited about with this one.

Today, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We remember the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities who continue to live with those impacts.

We’re grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to work alongside Indigenous communities, including on spaces like this gathering circle, created for connection, culture and community.

Today is about listening, learning, reflecting and remembering.

Every Child Matters.

We spend a lot of time looking at logs.

And after all these years, you still find ones that make you stop for a second and think, “Okay… what the heck could we use this for?”

This one definitely had that effect.

Pretty impressed with where it ended up. Turning it into a table was a good call.

Some homes look like they were placed on a property.

The best ones look like they belong there.

The landscape, the views, the way the home sits on the site. All of it matters long before the finishing touches are put on.

Because when you’re building somewhere this beautiful, the house doesn’t need to compete with its surroundings.

It should feel like part of them.

Everyone wants a new home to have character.

But a lot of the time, the things that give a home character are the exact things we’ve spent years trying to make perfectly uniform.

The knots. The grain. A bit of variation. A log that isn’t exactly the same shape as the one beside it.

With natural timber, you don’t have to fake any of that later.

It’s already there from the start.

The log was weird.

So obviously we kept it.

One of the best parts of building with natural timber is finding the pieces that aren't perfectly straight or uniform and figuring out what they could become.

Over the years, character logs have found their way into statement entrances, multi-storey features, bunk beds and plenty of other places they probably weren't destined for when the tree first came down.

Sometimes the piece that looks the hardest to work with ends up being the one everyone remembers.

We like those ones.

Say “log home,” and there’s a pretty good chance you’re picturing a rustic little cabin in the woods.

Fair enough.

But that’s one version of what building with logs can look like.

Big expanses of glass. Clean architectural lines. Open living spaces. Contemporary kitchens. Modern finishes.

Timber doesn’t dictate one particular style.

It’s the material you get to build the style around.

And sometimes the most interesting homes are the ones that aren't quite what people expect a “log home” to be.
