Glazing With Clear Distinction

GSI Glass Structures Inc. was established in 2008. GSI is a family owned business specializing in the fabrication and installation of glass and aluminum systems for commercial buildings. The company’s main specialty is sky lighting and sloped glazing, however, over the years we have had the distinction of being involved in other glass and aluminum projects that stray from the norm in complexity and design that have set GSI apart from our competitors. Although we do some conventional curtain wall and commercial glazing jobs, our focus is on projects of special and more complex applications that have a more modern feel and are appealing to today’s Architects and their visions for buildings in this era.

Geoff Blackbeard (President of GSI) started in the glass and aluminum business in 1976 as an estimator and draftsman and progressed from there to starting Architectural Building Products Ltd in 1985. Architectural Building Products Ltd became the exclusive dealer/installer of IBG Canada Ltd Skylight Systems in 1987 and had the opportunity to build some of the most iconic skylights in Atlantic Canada. The Blue Cross Center Atrium in Moncton NB, the Octagon Skylight in top of Crystal Palace (now Bass Pro Shop) Dieppe NB, the Sunnyside Mall Various skylights Bedford NS, and Barrel Vault Skylights at Place De L’Acadie Caraquet NB. (Please see pictures in the Related Experience Album on the Page) are some of the projects completed by ABPL. In the mid 90’s Geoff decided to pursue a passion to build passive solar concrete houses until 2004 when he realized that the uphill battle to convince people of the benefits of that type of housing was not economically feasible to continue. He worked as a site services representative for a local Architectural Firm and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure NB until he and Ryan decided to work together with GSI.

Ryan Blackbeard (Vice President of GSI) finished his Civil Engineering Technology course at NBCC in 2007 and worked for a local engineering firm preparing project drawings. In 2010 Geoff approached Ryan with the idea to take GSI in a direction that would continue the relationship with IBG Canada as their exclusive dealer/installer in the region and also work to build the company with the vision of specializing in more complex glass structure projects in Atlantic Canada. (Note: GSI was established in 2008 to represent IBG and sell their products to other Glass and Aluminum Companies. An effort that did not prove to be the best fit for either GSI or IBG.)

Some Noteworthy Projects

GSI was proud to be involved with the Sackville Town Hall/Municipal Services that featured an Architectural design simulating reeds on the face of the Council Chamber curtain wall. (See Photos for Sackville Town Hall). This Architectural feature was unique and GSI was able to accomplish this in an example that shows what is possible with imagination and an eager client who wants their building to stand out.

GSI went on to construct what is most likely the most complicated glass structure in Atlantic Canada - The Atrium at Resurgo Place Moncton NB (See Photos of Moncton Museum). The glass structure on this building was designed to look like the Cow Catcher of a train from the past and the result is a stunning piece of architecture the City of Moncton is proud of.

The Riverview Operations Center (See Photos for Riverview Operations) features a 4 sided structural silicone design that sets the building apart from others giving it a look of what 21st Century buildings should look like.

Another Project of distinction is the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton (See Photos for Beaverbrook Art Gallery). This project was also 4 sided structural silicone and was also unitized and pre-glazed in cooperation with IBG. IBG built the frames and GSI installed the glass into the frames in their shop. The Gallery windows are 22’ high with 32” deep vertical beams that give the windows a giant louvered appearance inside the Gallery. The beams were made with special laminated wood covered with a white composite aluminum. The glass is so special it was over 2” thick and designed to keep out any of the sun’s rays that could potentially harm the expensive art work in the Gallery. The overall effect of this project is a building with simple but modern elegance mostly due to the unique curtain wall system and the Architect’s unwavering vision.

We also had the opportunity to work on the Government of Canada Building in Moncton NB (See Photos for GOCB Moncton). There were some different and interesting applications of glass and aluminum on this building. We partnered with Alumicor to provide a framing that met all levels of efficiency a curtainwall can provide. Another new feature was the application of maple leaves ink jet printed inside the glass layers in the main entrance curtain wall. This effect is amazing and the glass supplier, Prelco, did an incredible job of keeping the lines of the leaves from one piece of glass to the other. GSI is most proud of the glass panels on the front Main St Elevation. Krisro Metal built the aluminum frames, GSI installed the spandrel glass panels into the frames, and GSI installed the panels onto the building. The effect is spectacular and gives a basic straight line building an ultra-modern appearance.
