Fun upcoming event!

Microsystems with NALT: Design and build your own potted native ecosystems

Join Biologist, Ecologist and Naturalist Jeremiah Kennedy on a guided walk through the Parnassian Woods to meet and visualize systems and plants, and then receive a practical demonstration on building local potted ecosystems. Participants will then build their own personal microsystems to take home with them. Clay (ceramic or terracotta) pots, native seed mix (from hyper-local seeds), soil, mulch, moss, wood, biochar and other important features of microsystems will all be provided.

Admission: $50/person

Can you believe how incredible this landscape looks just one year later?

The veggie garden with the greenhouse was an uneven slope with stumps and rock shrapnel left over from the construction of the house.

From unusable to the heart of the property - today it is flourishing with diversity and abundance 🌱

We’re having fun on this project in Nanoose - creating a series of these timber post details throughout the property. The style fits nicely with the wood detail on Pheasant Hill Homes gorgeous new build.

These posts add year round structure into garden beds and can double as a privacy screen that isn’t the same old solid fencing.

Getting the heights just right for the landscape and the balance of each group takes some time, but that creative process is our favourite part!

A check-in at one of our favourite design + installs of 2026. 🌿

We always hope we’re invited back to the gardens we build. Best case (like this one) we get to partner with the property owners through ongoing Stewardship.

Because landscapes are dynamic.

Especially in those first few years, the ecosystem is still finding its balance. Some plants thrive and need a little more space. Others need more time, water or nurturing. Sometimes a plant doesn’t make it and needs to be replaced — and with a 500+ plant installation like this one, a few replacements are to be expected. (We cover plant replacement for the first year.)

After nearly a decade of putting plants in the ground, one thing has become very clear to us:

Restored landscapes rarely thrive entirely on their own — at least not initially.

Human hands need to guide their development. Observation tells us what’s changing. Small adjustments, timely care and a willingness to respond to what the landscape is showing makes a huge difference.

The goal isn’t to control the landscape.

It’s to pay attention, respond and help it find its way.

That’s Stewardship 🌱

Alder’s Ops Manager and Lead Horticulturalist, Kurstin is conducting our first Wildfire Resilience Assessments this week! As part of our Property Stewardship work we’re zooming out and looking at these properties as a whole to identify practical ways to reduce wildfire risk while supporting a healthy, thriving landscape.

These assessments are now being incorporated into our Stewardship Program as we continue to think beyond maintenance and toward long-term care, resilience, and preparedness.

A fun and rewarding community event!

Did you know that areas of non-native grass provide very little value for pollinators and wildlife?

We're working with Nanaimo Old City Neighborhood Association
to change that in this urban neighborhood by converting these ecological dead zones into beautiful native wildflower habitat that supports bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators.

Join us for a hands-on habitat enhancement project and help:
✅ Plant native flowers
✅ Restore biodiversity
✅ Support pollinators
✅ Create healthier landscapes

Side-by-side comparison of native species being way more resilient than the ornamental variety.

Native yarrow is particularly drought tolerant, making it a reliable food source in dry summer months, and a great choice for long lasting blooms for cut flowers, tea, medicine etc.

We are excited to share this garden studio + habitat restoration project recently completed. Our first design-build that includes a structure!

The space will be used as a yoga studio and guest room. It was designed around the trees - to give the property owners as much canopy as possible and a full sense of being immersed in nature as the plants fill in.

We can’t wait to see the plants grow up to surround this space!

Just a few weeks after planting, some of the first native species in this mini forest are already blooming.

These initial flowers do more than just look beautiful— they provide nectar and pollen for native pollinators while the rest of the planting establishes. It’s one of the first signs that the ecological processes we’re working to restore are underway.

Every species is chosen for a purpose. Together, they’ll grow into a diverse, layered forest that supports wildlife, improves soil health, stores carbon, and becomes more resilient with each passing season.

Restoration doesn’t happen overnight. It begins with small, intentional steps — and sometimes, the first flowers.
