Side-by-side comparison of native species being way more resilient than the ornamental variety.

Native yarrow is particularly drought tolerant, making it a reliable food source in dry summer months, and a great choice for long lasting blooms for cut flowers, tea, medicine etc.

We are excited to share this garden studio + habitat restoration project recently completed. Our first design-build that includes a structure!

The space will be used as a yoga studio and guest room. It was designed around the trees - to give the property owners as much canopy as possible and a full sense of being immersed in nature as the plants fill in.

We can’t wait to see the plants grow up to surround this space!

Just a few weeks after planting, some of the first native species in this mini forest are already blooming.

These initial flowers do more than just look beautiful— they provide nectar and pollen for native pollinators while the rest of the planting establishes. It’s one of the first signs that the ecological processes we’re working to restore are underway.

Every species is chosen for a purpose. Together, they’ll grow into a diverse, layered forest that supports wildlife, improves soil health, stores carbon, and becomes more resilient with each passing season.

Restoration doesn’t happen overnight. It begins with small, intentional steps — and sometimes, the first flowers.

What if the underused spaces on our properties could become part of something bigger?

This once-unused edge of a productive garden was redesigned as a Mini Forest—a dense and diverse community of native trees, shrubs, ferns and groundcovers intended to grow together and create habitat over time.

But creating a Mini Forest involves more than simply planting densely. Thoughtful soil preparation creates the conditions for healthy, rapid growth, while careful species selection considers the site, the different layers of a forest and how plants will function together as a community.

As this planting grows, it will provide more food and shelter for birds, pollinators and other wildlife while contributing to a more diverse and resilient landscape. while bringing the forest closer to these property owners who adore the trees.

Private properties make up a significant part of our communities, and even small areas have the potential to contribute to broader habitat networks. An unused edge, a difficult-to-maintain slope or a portion of lawn can become part of a larger living system.

Your property has the potential to do more.

The Treehouse Courtyard 🌱

With one of the most breathtaking views in Nanaimo, this little courtyard is full of potential.

We’re embracing the feeling of being nestled in the trees, transforming the space into a cozy, elevated retreat. Think lush potted trees creating a living canopy, a sculptural spiral staircase connecting the two landings, and sheltered seating nooks tucked away from the wind.

Looking forward to bringing this one to life! 🌱

Happy Summer ☀️

We’re in the flow of an amazing season, and excited for the summer ahead. We managed to snap a photo of most of the team - we’re rarely all in one place at once!

We are continually blown away by the calibre of folks we get to work with. Incredible knowledge, dedication and work ethic in this crew.

Left to right: Marina, Madeline, Emily, Kurstin, Lindsey & Ronny. (Missing George!) 🌱

Good stewardship doesn’t come from perfection.

It comes from relationship.

Letting native plants emerge.
Planting species that thrive naturally.
Learning your invasives early.
Allowing space for natural “mess.”
Building soil instead of degrading it.

This is the foundation of restorative landscaping — working with living systems, not against them.

Most of the change starts with paying attention 🌱

Do you know what you’re ’w**ding’ out of your garden? 🤔

Almost every property has really beautiful native plants trying their BEST to become established.

Often they are misidentified as ‘w**ds’ and a huge opportunity is lost. Not only are these plants, beautiful, beneficial, and likely the lowest maintenance option possible - they also tell us really cool information about our property and the direction that nature is tugging us in.

So before you pull a w**d, get to know its name (we love the Seek App) and learn a little about it - you may find you have some pretty special species popping up!
