Rock chip in your windshield? Ignoring it is not a repair method.

Tristan is a Red Seal auto glass technician with 11 years at Budget Glass in Nanaimo.
His rule of thumb: chips up to about half an inch by half an inch can usually be repaired.

Bigger damage may mean a windshield replacement.

His advice? Get it filled sooner rather than later. A repaired chip is far less likely to spread. Sadly, waiting for payday does not pause windshield physics.

This summer Budget Glass hit the Hub City Soap Box Derby in Nanaimo. Great event, great cause, zero crashes. 😎👍

Are rock chips free to repair through ICBC? 🤔

Short answer: usually, yes. If you've got ICBC Comprehensive and the chip qualifies (small enough, in the right spot), the repair is free. No deductible, and it won't touch your rates.

Here's the catch, it's the word repair. Ignore a chip and it spreads into a crack, and now you're looking at a full windshield replacement, which does carry a deductible.

The gravel trucks are back out, so get it looked at before winter makes the decision for you. We're an ICBC Glass Express shop, so bring the claim straight to us. We ❤️ Glass · 📍 Nanaimo

The trucks are back out. So is chip season. 🪨

Every year around now the sand and gravel goes down, and every year we start seeing the same thing: a small chip in October that turns into a windshield-wide crack by February.

A chip takes about 30 minutes to fix. A crack takes your whole day and a new windshield.

If you've picked one up on the highway, bring it in before the cold finds it.
