A few photos from a laneway home that was finished last fall by the talented and capable builders Mark and Thomas Dodsworth. The client, who had been living outside of Nelson, wanted to downsize and be closer to family.

It was based on a modified Pica laneway home design that we continued to fine tune as we went.

The last time I saw it was pre-move in, and earlier this week I had the chance to visit again and see the finished space sans appliance boxes and drywall dust.

It was nice to see that the thoughtful approach the client showed when we worked together had been carried through to each finishing detail!

It can be tough deciding what stays and goes when you’re moving to a smaller space, but what I saw was not only very functional, but curated with a mix of new and old belongings that make it uniquely her home.

Another new build from a few years back - this home features two tall and narrow opposing windows on the east and west walls, resulting in not only long views but the long "zip" of light seen in the photo when the afternoon sun is right.

I think details matter, like this one for an airtight attic hatch. Including them in a drawing set helps ensure comfort, energy efficiency, and durability are built into the design.

Plus I really like talking with clients and builders about them.

Some photos from a laneway home I worked on a few years back. Mike Coen was the owner/builder and really did an outstanding job with the whole project. From low carbon assemblies (i.e. walls, floor and roof) to both interior and exterior finishes, it’s a lovely home.

Framing is almost complete on this Uphill laneway house! Mark and Thomas Dodsworth are the capable building team here, looking forward to seeing the continued progress.
