There are about 1000 different species of trees in North America and about 100,000 in the world. Many of those are endangered.

What is a Tree?
Although most everybody is sure they can recognize them, a tree is defined as a woody, perennial plant that typically has a single trunk that is at least 3 inches in diameter at a point of 4.5 feet above the ground, a defined form of crown foliage, and is over 13 to 14 feet in height. (4.5 metres)
