Because the front axle carries the truck and its load, while the rear wheels handle the steering. This gives forklifts the tight manoeuvrability they need—but it also creates a hazard many people underestimate: tail swing. ⚠️

Turn left ⬅️ the counterweight swings right.
Turn right ➡️ the counterweight swings left.

Here’s the surprising part: the forks can clear an object while the back of the forklift still hits it seconds later. That means operators must watch more than the load—they must understand the entire sweep zone. 👀

Before entering a corner:

⚠️ A 5,000 lb forklift cannot always lift 5,000 lb.

A forklift’s usable capacity depends on more than the weight of the load. Several factors can change what the truck is approved to lift safely:

📏 Load centre — how far the weight sits from the fork face
📈 Lift height — how high the load must travel
🔧 Attachments — added weight and changes to the load position
📦 Load placement — uneven or poorly positioned loads affect stability
🏷️ Capacity plate — the approved information operators must follow

The farther a load’s centre of gravity moves forward, the more leverage it creates against the forklift—even when the load’s weight stays the same.
