Community Votes provide a platform for local businesses across all sectors to be recognized by their surrounding community. These awards recognize these businesses across Niagara for their service, professionalism, and community impact.

Five years ago, I started De Simone Designs after 11 years with a local architectural firm, with a goal to work more directly with homeowners, builders, and developers to create well-coordinated, buildable, and architecturally distinctive projects.

Multi-generational living works best when design is both thoughtful and restrained.

This Accessory Dwelling Unit in Welland was designed as a Scandinavian-influenced contemporary cottage for a multi-unit family seeking a calm, comfortable, and independent living space that still feels connected to the main home.

Rooted in simple forms, natural materials, and efficient planning, the design balances traditional cottage proportions with modern Scandinavian sensibilities — clean lines, generous natural light, and a warm, understated exterior.

Working with an experienced designer allows accessory dwelling units and garden suites to be carefully tailored to both the house and the property, ensuring:
• Clear, intuitive layouts that support daily living
• Strong indoor-outdoor connections
• Efficient use of space without feeling compact
• Long-term flexibility for changing family needs
• A cohesive architectural presence that enhances the entire property

In this project, particular attention was given to flow, proportion, and livability, creating a secondary dwelling that feels intentional, welcoming, and quietly refined — not secondary.

Accessory dwelling units designed for multi-generational families can offer independence without isolation, providing a dignified, well-designed home that supports family life over time.
