Outdoor cooking spaces usually go one of two ways. It's either an afterthought, and barely gets used, OR it's thoughtfully designed and becomes a key part of entertaining and memory making.

The outdoor cooking spaces that do get used have a few things in common (especially here in Vancouver).
- They're covered so you can light up the BBQ regardless of the weather
- They're conveniently located and easy to access from the main entertaining area
- They're isolated enough that the grill master can have their peace, but close enough where they still can be involved in what's going on

These are a few of the things we think about when designing outdoor cooking spaces.

Cadence is raising the roof in West Van.

At this project the family loved their home, but as the family grew larger the spaces that once felt spacious, were now feeling small.

Moving wasn't an option, but adding a few feet of ceiling height and making it feel like a new space was.

So that's exactly what we did, raised the exterior walls and added a big vault to open the space even more. Walking into this room feels completely different now, but the neighbourhood, home and memories still feel familiar.

If you're looking to renovate or build a new home, dm us or fill out the form on our website, we'll get back to you straight away.

On full gut renovations, our project managers work with the client, designers, and architects to determine what parts of the existing structure stay, and what ones go.

It's an intricate balance of logistics, costs and dream outcomes. On this particular project, we raised the roof on the tarped portion of the home, but through the doorway, we kept that whole structure and original ceiling height.

The increased ceiling height in the busiest area of the home will have a huge quality-of-life impact; in the laundry room, not so much. Spend money where it matters, save it where it doesn't.

Here's how to take the roof off a home to renovate it in one of the rainiest cities in Canada, without causing tons of damage to the existing structure.

To keep everything dry, we put up a temporary roof enclosure. We build out this large scaffolding structure over and around the home, then cover it with thick waterproof plastic.

This is not always necessary, but in the Winter the cost of the temporary roof enclosure is well worth it, especially if you have existing rooms in the home that can't be damaged.

Betting on having no rain or waiting for an opening in the weather to take your roof off is fools errand.

Proper weather prep is a common oversight in budgets and scheduling, but with Cadence Construction, you can trust we've already thought of it.

Ever seen a tarp this big?

At this project our designers suggested a simple change to the roofline of this home to massively increase the curb appeal and functionality of the entranceway.

It was a great suggestion, it looks great already and the client is loving the way it's made their home look and function.

So... what's a cantilevered gable? A gable is the point where both of the rooflines meet, when looking at the home these look like triangles. Cantilever means that it's overhanging the wall of the home and is not supported from below but instead supported from inside the home.

A good way to think about this is a diving board, it's anchored very strong at one end, then the rest overhangs without additional support. Same thing here - there's giant beams inside the home supporting the small portion that overhangs.

Long days, tight timelines, and no room for mistakes.

Every project comes with its challenges—and that’s where creativity comes in.
Running the gas line beneath pedestal pavers allowed us to deliver a completely seamless fire feature.
No shortcuts. No compromises. Just a real fire, done right.

A statement in every step.

This staircase brings together clean lines, precision craftsmanship, and thoughtful design — a feature that not only connects spaces, but defines them. We make sure to complete finishes like this at the right stage, keeping them protected from the wear and tear of materials and furniture moving through the home during construction.
