The stone doesn’t stop. The light doesn’t have a hotspot. The shadows don’t hit the gym equipment.

The bar shelves were custom cut to flow through the wall without interruption. The media centre panels were mapped on a computer before they were cut — two pieces of stone, grain aligned, one seamless read. The gym spotlights were placed around where the equipment would actually sit. The mirrors use a specialty LED strip that washes the wall softly. The ceiling cove channels the light out evenly from the recess instead of creating a bright focal point.

Every detail in this basement was a decision.

From Suite to Sweet!

An existing basement suite converted to a lounge, gym, sauna, and more....

This sauna needed two rows of seating.

The glass came out from the wall to make the depth work — enough room inside the sauna, enough hallway to meet code. The closet beside it is touch-actuated. No handle. Flush with the wall. Nothing to catch yourself on.

Every constraint had a solution.

Two separate bedrooms upstairs. No shared walls with your neighbour. A deck with views of the Lions Gate Bridge.

This isn't a townhouse. There's nothing typical about it. The laneway homes at the Knowles Residences were designed to feel like standalone homes — because that's what they are.

We figured out the model. We built two of them. And the best part? This is something that can be repeated in your own backyard on the North Shore.

A full living area. A kitchen set up for an island. And yes — a basement.

Most people don't expect a laneway home to have this much space. This one at the Knowles Residences does. The basement alone can be configured as one bedroom, two bedrooms, or left open as a recreation area depending on how you want to use it.

We lifted this house, moved it 16 feet forward, built a brand new foundation underneath it, and then added two laneway homes at the back.

That's the short version. The longer version is that this heritage revitalization project on West 14th Street in North Vancouver is what happens when you refuse to tear something down just because it's old. The main home is bigger now, more suited to how people actually live today — and the two laneway homes behind it are exactly what the North Shore needs more of.

Small-scale, multi-unit housing done well. This is where housing is going.

In a few weeks, this will be a curved hot tub with a fire pit beside it and a stone veneer retaining wall wrapping the whole space together.

Right now it's a muddy platform. That's how all the best outdoor entertaining spaces start.

The hot tub follows the curve of the retaining wall — no sharp edges, no disconnected elements. Just one continuous design that steps down from the main deck into its own space. Intentional, considered, and built to last.

Not every builder puts a sauna with surround sound, a glass curtain wall, and an outdoor shower on the same project.

We do.

This curved sauna at our Altamont project follows the exterior curve of the home and wraps right into the building — glass wall, two-tiered wood bench, a proper heating element, and two speakers for when you want to actually enjoy the experience.

Step out through the glass into the outdoor shower, or head back through the house. Either way, it flows. That's intentional.

Leaded glass windows. A heritage weather vane. And from inside, a direct view of the Lions Gate Bridge.

This is the upper floor of the turret suite at the Knowles Residences — a 1910 Arts and Crafts home we lifted, relocated, and rebuilt into four modern homes on West 14th Street in North Vancouver. The character stays. Everything behind the walls is brand new.

The ensuite in this unit splits into two separate spaces — one with a full shower, one as a makeup and powder room. Small detail, big difference in how a home actually lives.

A 1910 home. Lifted, moved forward, rebuilt from the inside out and the outside in. Four brand new homes — all with the character of the original.

This is the Knowles Residences on West 14th Street in North Vancouver, and it's one of the more unique projects we've taken on. The turret, the Arts and Crafts architecture, the heritage balcony, the restored front entry steps — all of it preserved and brought back to life. What looks like a piece of neighbourhood history is actually four completely modern homes underneath.

This is what heritage revitalization looks like when it's done right.

A bedroom that backs onto a creek and looks out into the gardens. We added a window that wasn't in the original design — because once you see the view, you don't walk away from it.

The primary bedroom at our Altamont project in West Vancouver has grown from the original plans. Expanded to include a full seating area, larger windows, and the other side of that see-through fireplace you may have caught in our last update. Come spring, you'll be able to hear the creek from bed.

And just off the bedroom — a walk-in closet that's anything but an afterthought. Full cabinetry, a seating area under the window, and enough space to actually use it.

We're coming back to this one. Stay with us.
