Among the most recognizable pieces of equipment at a bulk terminal such as Neptune are the shiploaders.

At our terminal, shiploaders help move steelmaking coal and potash onto vessels through conveyor and loading systems.

Shiploading is one of the final steps in the export supply chain before Canadian resources leave the terminal for international markets.

We are excited to welcome Wesley Jane Penman to the Neptune team as our Human Resources & Communications Intern for Summer 2026!

Wesley brings a genuine passion for people, culture, and communication — shaped in part by years of playing team sports, where she developed a deep appreciation for leadership, teamwork, and what it takes to build a strong culture.

Over the coming months, she will have the opportunity to explore not only HR and Communications, but also other areas across the business. As she puts it: "This co-op is giving me a well-rounded introduction to how a successful business functions."

When asked about her experience so far, Wesley shared: "The team has made my experience so positive by happily answering questions, sharing advice, and offering insight into how Neptune operates."

Did you know potash has its origins in ancient inland seas?

Millions of years ago, vast bodies of water covered parts of what is now Saskatchewan. As those waters evaporated, they left behind mineral deposits that are mined as potash today.

Potash is best known for its role in agriculture. As a potassium-rich mineral, it is used in fertilizer to support plant health, root strength, water use, and crop quality.

It also has other applications, including soaps, water softeners, de-icers, and industrial products.

At Neptune, potash is one of the two Canadian commodities handled through our terminal, moving through the supply chain from Saskatchewan mines to international markets.

During BC Mining Month, we are taking a closer look at how Canadian steelmaking coal moves through the supply chain, and Neptune’s role as a bulk terminal in that journey.

Steelmaking coal is distinct from thermal coal, which is used for power generation. It is used in the production of steel — a material found in buildings, bridges, hospitals, vehicles, railways, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and other infrastructure modern life depends on.

Before reaching international markets, the steelmaking coal handled at Neptune begins its journey at mines in B.C.’s Elk Valley and travels west by rail to our North Vancouver terminal.

This video shows one part of that journey: how railcars are unloaded at Neptune using our single car dumper and tandem dumper systems before the material continues through the terminal.

Every year, Neptune Terminals is proud to support the Windsor Secondary Drag Racing Club — a hands-on automotive program that gives North Shore students a real application of the skills they are learning in the auto program, both in the shop and on the track at Mission Raceway Park.

Led by automotive teacher Stephen Lonsbrough, the club runs from mid-April through the end of June, with a test-and-tune day in September. Students develop practical experience in vehicle maintenance, safety, and drag racing — building skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

The club has also opened the door for female students to take the wheel and compete, with graduates going on to pursue careers in heavy duty mechanics and other trades.

For Neptune, supporting programs like this is one way we invest in hands-on learning, technical skills, and future pathways for students in the community.

After 38 years with Neptune Terminals, Jeff Crawford, our Director of Marine Logistics and Quality Management Systems, recently retired — and we couldn’t let this moment pass without celebrating the remarkable career he has built here.

Jeff joined Neptune in 1988, making him one of our longest-serving employees. Over nearly four decades, he has coordinated logistics for the shipment of Canadian steelmaking coal, potash, and other commodities through our terminal, while supporting shareholder and customer service activities.

His connection to the North Shore extends beyond his work at Neptune. Having grown up in the community, Jeff has shared his knowledge with students, led terminal tours, and contributed to moments such as the waterfront industry’s effort to help rebuild Novaco Daycare in Norgate after the 2013 fire.

Jeff, thank you for 38 years of dedication to Neptune. We wish you all the best in this next chapter.

Thank you to District of North Vancouver Firefighters Charitable Society for continuing to show up for our North Shore community in ways that truly matter.

Mental Health Week was an important reminder of the continued need for programs, initiatives, and resources that support mental health while creating space for connection and belonging, both in our workplaces and across the community.

It’s encouraging to see the impact of organizations like DNV Firefighters Charitable and Family Services of the North Shore, whose work helps ensure young people and families have access to care, guidance, and resources when they need them.

At Neptune Terminals, we’re proud to partner with these organizations and others, and contribute to their work reducing stigma, connecting people with mental health resources, and offering meaningful support to North Shore families.

Last week was Mental Health Week across BC.

We believe that true strength comes from training both the mind and the body. Just as physical fitness builds endurance and power, nurturing mental health fosters resilience, clarity, and hope. Life’s challenges can test even the strongest among us, and reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s an act of courage.

We are committed to ensuring that young people have a safe place to turn when they need guidance, support, or simply someone to listen. That’s why we proudly invest in Family Services of the North Shore’s youth counselling programs, helping our next generation thrive. Last year, they served 160+ children and youth, providing 1,200+ hours of counselling.

Family Services North Shore Senior Manager of Clinical Practice, “A key part of a healthy childhood is an environment of safety, trust, and predictability. For various reasons, many children in our community do not have these three ingredients in steady supply. Our goal is to provide this experience for the children and families we support. A child’s heart can be healed, and the health of their family can be restored best with a counsellor whom they can count on as “theirs.”

Did you know that more than 90% of potash produced in Canada is used as an agricultural crop fertilizer, making it one of the most important minerals for crop production worldwide?

Potash is a naturally occurring group of potassium-rich minerals that provides potassium, one of three key nutrients alongside nitrogen and phosphorus, that help crops grow and thrive. Canada's potash resources are concentrated in Saskatchewan, home to some of the largest deposits in the world.

After mining and processing, potash travels west by rail to Neptunel, where it is loaded onto vessels bound for international agricultural markets.
