I’ve recently become a Corporate Associate of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).

CAOT is the national organization representing occupational therapists across Canada, supporting a profession that focuses on helping people live safely, independently, and meaningfully in their daily lives.

A lot of the work I do sits in that space between recommendations and implementation, taking ideas around safety and accessibility and making them real in people’s homes.

This is one way I stay connected to the people and thinking behind that work, and continue improving how I approach safety and accessibility in real homes.

One thing I didn’t quite expect in the early months of starting Good Company is just how many light fixtures I’d end up installing.

It turns out people put off lighting upgrades for years. Then someone finally decides to change a fixture, and suddenly a whole room feels different. It’s one of those quick jobs that can completely transform a space.

I’ve really come to enjoy these installations. There’s something satisfying about doing a small job carefully and seeing an immediate improvement in how a home looks and feels.

See this wall of ice? It’s not just a winter eyesore. It’s usually a sign that water is backing up inside your gutters and dumping straight against your house.

If you ever see a thick sheet of ice running down the wall beside a downspout (not just hanging from the gutter), your drainage system is already failing.

Quick signs to check at your own home:
• ice forming along the wall next to the downspout
• water dripping during a thaw but not coming out at the bottom
• gutters overflowing even though they don’t look blocked

Many Canadian veterans don’t realize they can receive financial help from Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) for home safety improvements and everyday supports.
