Before any insulation is installed, we make sure the attic is properly prepared and everything is working as it should.

In this attic, the bathroom fan ducting hose needed to be replaced, so we installed a new one and properly insulated it to ensure moist air vents outside as intended.

When it comes to attic insulation, one of the most important terms you’ll hear is R-value.

But what does it actually mean?

R-value measures how well insulation resists heat flow.

Simply put — the higher the R-value, the better your attic keeps heat inside during Calgary winters and outside during hot summer days. ☀️❄️

Different insulation materials have different R-values per inch.

The R-value system isn’t something contractors invented themselves - it’s a standardized measurement used in building codes for homes across North America.

Current Alberta code recommends approximately R-50 to R-60 for attic insulation in residential homes.

Many older Calgary homes were originally built with much lower insulation levels — sometimes around R-12 to R-20, and even later homes often only had R-30 or R-40 in the attic. Modern standards are much higher because we now understand far more about energy efficiency, moisture control, and long-term roof performance.

In many cases, homeowners may also qualify for financing programs, energy-efficiency incentives, or rebate programs when upgrading attic insulation to higher levels like R-50 or above.
