Breaking Ground and Building the Future — Continuing to Shape Hamilton’s Skyline

Proud to stand alongside our partners at Fengate Asset Management, Hi-Rise Group, and the LiUNA Pension Fund of Central and Eastern Canada to celebrate the groundbreaking of The Forty-Eight — a transformative new rental tower in the heart of Hamilton.

This 29-storey development will bring 417 new, more-affordable rental homes to the city — helping address the critical need for attainable housing while setting a new standard for design, livability, and community impact.
What you don’t see in this photo are the hundreds of skilled, dedicated workers whose craftsmanship and commitment make projects like this possible. They are the true foundation of our industry — the men and women who turn plans into reality, one beam, one pour, and one detail at a time. Their pride in their work, precision, and professionalism are what give every project its’ strength. We’re proud to work alongside the very best in the trades, and grateful for the expertise they bring to every site.

Hamilton is a city in motion — vibrant, ambitious, and rapidly changing. Its downtown core is evolving into one of Ontario’s most dynamic urban centres, with new transit, modern housing, and investment from forward-thinking partners who share a vision for sustainable growth. Projects like The Forty-Eight don’t just add density — they shape the skyline and redefine what modern living in Hamilton can look like.

At SG Constructors, we’re proud to play a part in this evolution. Being involved in a project of this scale — and witnessing the skyline rise alongside the spirit of the community — is both a privilege and a responsibility we take seriously.
A sincere thank you to the City of Hamilton for their continued support and enthusiasm, and to everyone contributing to this exciting chapter in the city’s growth. Together, we’re not just constructing buildings — we’re building Hamilton’s future.

Marking a Major Milestone at 75 James Condos in Hamilton...

It’s a spectacle worthy of a movie shoot… and an event to remember.
This past week marked a significant milestone for our team at 75 James Street South Condos in Hamilton - the removal of the giant tower crane from the 34-storey tower.

The powerful 750 ton crane is a behemoth and its dismantling required careful and precise planning.

The original plan for the three-day removal operation was to begin with setup on Friday (Feb 21st), execute the removal on Saturday, and complete the final dismantling on Sunday. However, high winds on Saturday forced a change in strategy. Rather than risk delays, we used the day to complete full staging, ensuring everything was in place for a seamless ex*****on. With a long and intense workday on Sunday, our team rose to the challenge, completing the dismantling just in time for the city’s reopening on Monday.

This was no small feat—demanding specialized expertise, precise coordination, and long hours, often from impressive heights. Our priority was not only efficiency but also minimizing disruption to our Hamilton neighbors. By adapting to the weather and pushing through on Sunday, we ensured the project stayed on track without further delays to the community.

A special thank you to LIUNA, Fengate Asset Management, Limen Structures and Gabrielli Crane Erectors and all the men and women in the field whose efforts have brought us to this stage. The multi-tiered tower is aesthetically stunning and a tribute to the skills of all involved, modernizing Hamilton’s downtown core.

I also want to extend my appreciation to our neighbours and the City Of Hamilton for their patience as we temporarily shut down a major street to complete this work safely. We recognize the inconvenience, and we are grateful for your understanding and support.

Finally, a huge thank you to the SG Constructors team for their tireless commitment to ensuring this process is executed safely and efficiently. They worked through the weekend to ensure minimal disruption and maximum safety for the surrounding area, vehicles, and pedestrians. Your dedication is what makes projects like this possible.

Congratulations and thanks to all!

Strong Leadership for A Stronger Future

I don’t often get political on these posts, but we are entering a turning point in our history; one that requires strong and decisive leadership among governments that work for the people on issues that matter to workers and families.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Premier Doug Ford, members of his cabinet, and Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. Their messages were blunt and refreshing. They even challenged those of us in the construction industry to take actions that help better the nation. It wasn’t your typical kissing-up-to-the industry type of engagement. There was no long list of promises and panacea-solutions. It was straight talk about the problems we face and the concrete steps needed to meet them head-on.

Both of these leaders appear very focused on skills development for trades, promoting careers among students at various levels of school, and among new Canadians. Their plans to increase spending on training for skilled labour offers hope. Plus, the two Conservative leaders have a clear vision for accelerating the path into Canada using immigration policies that support those who have skilled trades experience.

I walked away from those conversations optimistic about the future, hopeful that potential conservative party leadership in both Ontario and Ottawa will lay the groundwork for economic recovery, efficiency, smart management of tax dollars, and immigration policies that aid the labour-starved construction sector.

You often hear me say that we need less government red tape. We need lower and fewer development charges and fees. We need to grow our workforce by aggressively seeking trainees for high-paying jobs in the trades. And, we need government policies that don’t stifle innovation in the private sector.

The Ford government has already made strides in these areas and Mr. Poilivre has signalled that a Conservative federal government would work hand-in-hand with Premier Ford to further these efforts. Cutting the GST on new homes under $1-million is a good start.

To remain competitive and to flourish as a country, we must insist our politicians support backbone industries like construction, which should not serve as an endless source of tax revenue for certain mayors and other politicians whose pet projects benefit few… but place financial burdens on many.

Leadership matters, and having two Conservative governments working in tandem could make a difference if they follow-up on their words with decisive actions.

I look forward to the coming elections, and the conversations I had last week with Mr. Ford and Mr. Poilievre reaffirmed my belief it’s time to give them the opportunity to deliver the policies, programs, and values Canadians deserve.

Last week, I was honored to join Joseph Mancinelli and Victoria Mancinelli from LIUNA in hosting Premier Doug Ford and the of Labour, Immigration and Training and Skills Development David Piccini in the City Of Hamilton for a tour of 75 James – an 33 story, 616 unit residential hi-rise under construction that is part of changing the Hamilton skyline.

It was a great visit where our esteemed guests had the opportunity to not just get a ‘boots-on-the-ground’ view of how buildings are made, but also recognize the skilled and dedicated workers that bring them to life. This visit was also a unique opportunity to showcase some of the innovative practices we at SG Constructors consistently implement to enhance safety, efficiency, and overall site aesthetics and operation.

One of the highlights of our discussion was the importance of parallel and perpendicular storage of construction materials. Proper storage techniques not only maximize space utilization but also play a crucial role in reducing accident risks and improving site organization. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), proper material storage can reduce job site injuries by up to 25%, underscoring its importance in maintaining a safe work environment. It was encouraging to see Premier Ford and Minister Piccini keenly acknowledge how these seemingly small and straightforward yet impactful practices contribute to a safer and more productive work environment.

Additionally, we delved into our adoption of "The Disney Way" management philosophy, which includes ‘over-managing’ things that others largely leave unmanaged. Known for its meticulous attention to detail, cleanliness, and exceptional customer experience, this philosophy has been transformative for our construction sites. By applying "The Disney Way," we've created a more orderly, visually appealing, and efficient work environment that enhances both worker mindset and client satisfaction. In fact, studies have shown that organized and clean workplaces can boost productivity by up to 20% and reduce error rates by up to 50% (Source: Harvard Business Review). As Walt Disney himself said, "Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again, and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do".

The visit underscored the real-world benefits of these practices and the positive impact they have on our projects. It's inspiring to witness high-level leaders taking a keen interest in the strategies that are shaping the future of the construction industry and the cities that benefit from the work that we all do.

“SHIFT 25” - Why You Should Join the Movement to Solve Canada’s Productivity Crisis

Canada is falling behind in productivity, threatening our future prosperity as a nation. It’s evident all around us, both anecdotally and in hard statistics.

Canada has become one of the most risk-averse countries in the world and it’s threatening our future prosperity as a nation. If this sounds alarmist, it is. And we should all be worried. But more than that, we should all sit up, take note, and take action immediately. Study after study shows our productivity levels are falling so much that we now lag behind countries we once dismissed as second and third world nations.

But there is a fascinating movement underway to “cultivate a bold and thriving Canada” with a shift in the way we work, innovate, and think.

Shift25 is the brainchild of an extraordinary group of entrepreneurs and leaders, including Richard Abboud, President & CEO at Forum Asset Management. Richard correctly points out that there is evidence Canadians are “falling in love with the problem that SHIFT 25 was founded to solve.”

The collective of Canadian leaders comprising Shift25, has identified four critical factors unique to our country that threaten our future:

* a rapidly aging population and low birth rate placing strain on health care
* productivity that lags global peers
* stagnant GDP frozen for more than a decade
* weak culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, ranking 20th in the world

There is a theory that if 25% of a population shifts its thinking in one direction, the rest of the population will follow. So the task falls to us to light the fuse among new generations to be bold, be productive, and revive our drive to innovate. The solution put forward by the leaders at SHIFT calls for us to “galvanize a new generation of young Canadians to greater productivity by inspiring them to be bold, innovative and ambitious, to take risks, to try new ideas and dare.”

The path to success requires a significant change in mindset about work, about work-ethic, and about creative and aggressive entrepreneurial ventures. Embracing SHIFT 25 is a positive step towards re-igniting the potential of our citizens, and our country.

Sitting down with andrew bell of BNN Bloomberg to talk about the realities of EV Charging readiness and retrofit in high-rise residential

I had an opportunity to speak with BNN Bloomberg to talk about some of the realities around EV charging implementations in high-rise residential ‘old and new’. This has certainly been a hot topic for all stakeholders (government, industry and consumer) as - despite a general consensus for the importance of greener vehicles – there is a very real and potential downside that policymakers and clean energy/climate advocates may not be aware of.

Host andrew bell invited me to appear on his new show to talk about these ‘blind spots’ and provide a voice from the construction and high-rise residential sector. It was a great discussion and he delved into the concerning aspects of the infrastructure changes required to meet growing government mandates for new buildings. Furthermore, we talked at length about the extremely high costs (that may be unaffordable/prohibitive for may economically vulnerable residents) of retrofits on new and existing parking garages. As mandates loom, demand for high-rise EV Charging solutions is only increasing and will exponentially spike in the very near future.

Thanks to host Andrew Bell for his coverage on this important issue. The conversation is just beginning and governments need to heed the advice of construction and electricity industry experts. While sustainability is a noble goal and the right thing to do – it must be done with a fuller perspective that includes not just the realities – but the impacts for the people that will ultimately pay for it, the owners and tenants who are already facing housing affordability issues.
