What would you do with this space?

This backyard had an old stone patio tucked beside the garage. It wasn’t a bad space, but it wasn’t somewhere you’d naturally want to spend time either.

The goal was simple: create a covered outdoor living area that felt like it had always been part of the home. By tying the new roof structure into the existing garage roofline, we transformed an overlooked corner into a comfortable place to relax, entertain, and enjoy the backyard.

The best projects don’t look like additions. They look like they were meant to be there from day one.

I came into the office this morning and found the new Wolf PVC Decking brochure sitting on my desk.

When I opened it up, I was surprised to see one of our projects featured on the first page.

This backyard was designed and built in 2021 with one goal in mind: create an extension of the house. The upper level was built around a swim spa, while the lower level provides a cozy space to relax around the fire table and enjoy the integrated lighting after sunset.

Pretty cool to see a project we built a few years ago still getting recognized today.

Why settle for just one outdoor living space?

This Toronto backyard was designed as a series of destinations, each serving a different purpose.

The space begins with a Fiberon composite deck featuring a louvered pergola, privacy screens, and built-in garden tool storage. From there, it transitions to a dining area finished with stonework, a large privacy wall with integrated lighting, and overhead shading for added comfort.

Further into the backyard, a second covered lounge creates a dedicated space for relaxing around a fire table, with hidden storage neatly tucked behind. At the rear of the property, a fully equipped 3-season room completes the space with a TV, bar, heating, and cooling for extended seasonal use.

When every area is designed with intention, a backyard becomes much more than a single patio or deck—it becomes an extension of the home.

Not every property allows for the “perfect” backyard layout. Sometimes, you have to get creative.

In this case, the patio doors opened onto a patio facing the driveway simply because of how the lot was set up. Instead of forcing a seating area that never felt quite right, we looked elsewhere.

By extending the garage roof and integrating it into a new covered seating area with natural stonework, we transformed an overlooked space into the true destination of the backyard—one that faces greenery, offers privacy, and feels exactly the way a backyard should.

Good outdoor design isn’t just about what you build. It’s about understanding how people actually want to live in the space.

I wasn’t expecting this from Steve.

Our project manager decided to make his own reel, and I have to admit… he absolutely nailed the authentic, unscripted vibe that makes social media fun in the first place.

The colours were right. The crew got the recognition they deserved. The enthusiasm was there.

Most people would never guess this is a townhouse backyard in Richmond Hill.

What started as a typical builder-grade yard is now a private outdoor retreat with two levels of living space.

The lower level features a dining area, hammock, waterproofed ceiling, screens, and a fan for comfort throughout the season.

Above, frameless glass railings preserve the views while creating another space to relax around the fire table.

Rain doesn’t have to end your time outside 🌧️🔥

This custom backyard project in Brampton was designed to stay functional even during heavy rain. While the upper composite deck is exposed to the weather, the waterproofed space underneath stays completely dry and usable — creating an outdoor living area that can be enjoyed in almost any conditions.

This project is still under construction, but it already shows how much extra functionality a properly designed second floor deck can add to a backyard. Once complete, the underside will be finished with a clear cedar ceiling along with in-lite lighting to create a warm and comfortable space day or night.

Projects like this are where deck design and landscape design start working together to create more than just a deck — they create a fully usable outdoor living space.

Most elevated decks end up wasting the entire space underneath with too many posts and footings.

For this custom second-floor walkout deck in Brampton, we used clever engineering + steel to create a massive 32’ span between posts, keeping the lower area completely open and usable.

We’re also waterproofing the upper deck so the space below can be enjoyed rain or shine ☔️☀️

One structure → two functional outdoor living spaces.
