Should you close the vents in rooms you don’t use? Most homeowners think so. 🤔

It feels like it should save energy. Less space to heat means less air needed. But your heating system is designed to move air through the whole home, and closing a vent doesn’t tell the furnace to produce less heat. 🔥

Here is what can happen instead:

🌬️ Pressure builds in the ductwork. Air still has to go somewhere, so closing too many vents can raise the pressure inside the ducts.

🚪 Airflow gets restricted. The furnace has to push air through fewer openings, which can make it work harder to do the same job.

⚖️ The balance of the system shifts. Rooms you do use can end up heating unevenly, and the system can run less effectively overall.

Closing vents isn’t a reliable way to lower your heating bill. It can make your system work less effectively. 🔧

If some rooms in your home never feel right, closing vents is not the fix. A maintenance visit looks at how your system is actually moving air, so you know where the issue is. 🏠

Your furnace talks before it fails. 🔊

Most homeowners hear a new noise, turn up the TV and hope it goes away. A sound that was not there last season is usually the earliest sign that something has changed inside the system. Here are three to listen for:

💥 Banging. Usually points to an ignition or airflow issue.

⚙️ Grinding or squealing. Often a sign the blower motor is wearing out.

🔁 Repeated clicking. Can mean the system is short cycling, turning on and off before it finishes a heating cycle. That adds wear on the equipment and wastes energy.

None of these mean stop everything. All of them mean it is time to have a professional look at it. A maintenance visit checks these parts before the heating season is in full swing, so a small issue gets caught while it is still small. 🔧

Which of these have you heard from your furnace?

What does your furnace filter actually do? 🤔

Most homeowners think it is only about clean air. That is part of the job, but not all of it.

🌬️ It cleans the air. The filter catches dust, pet hair and particles before they circulate through your home.

🔧 It protects your furnace. By catching dust and debris, it keeps them from building up inside the system.

🔥 It keeps air moving the way your system was designed to. A dirty filter restricts airflow, which makes your furnace work harder to heat your home.

Your filter does not only protect the air you breathe. It protects the system keeping your home warm.

Do not wait for it to stop working. 🔧

Your heating and cooling system usually shows signs before it fails. Most homeowners notice them and let them slide. Here is what to watch for:

🔊 Unusual sounds. Banging, squealing or rattling often points to a worn part or a component under strain.

💡 Rising energy bills. If your usage has not changed but your bill has, your system is likely working harder to do the same job.

🌡️ Uneven temperatures. Rooms that stay colder or warmer than the rest can point to an airflow or performance issue.

These are warnings, not coincidences. A maintenance visit checks the system, catches small issues early and helps extend the life of your equipment.

Before you turn your furnace on this season, run through this checklist first. 🔥

Your furnace has been off for months. The first start-up of the season is when small problems show up, like a clogged filter, a blocked vent or a thermostat that isn't responding. Five minutes now is easier than a cold night later.

Here is what to check and why it matters:

🌬️ Change or check the filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow, so the furnace works harder to heat your home.

🚪 Make sure vents are open and clear. Blocked vents throw off airflow and leave some rooms colder than others.

🚫 Clear anything flammable within 3 feet of the furnace. Boxes, paint and cleaning products stored too close are a fire risk.

🌡️ Test your thermostat before the cold hits. Find out it isn't working while it's still mild outside, not on the first freezing night.

🔔 Test your carbon monoxide alarm. It is the safety check that matters most on this list, and it takes a few seconds.

A brand-new furnace doesn't guarantee a comfortable home.

That might sound strange coming from an HVAC company, but it's true. Comfort isn't something equipment provides on its own. It comes from what happens before the equipment is even chosen.

A proper evaluation looks at how your home actually holds and moves air, room by room. It looks at how the system should be sized for your specific space, not a standard size pulled off a shelf. And it looks at how everything will perform across every season, not just on install day.

Skip that step, and even the best equipment underdelivers. It's the exact reason so many homes stay uncomfortable, even after a brand-new installation. 🏠

At Excel, that evaluation happens first, every time. It's the standard we hold for every job, residential or commercial.

Don’t wait for a sub-zero night to find out your furnace is struggling. 🛑 ❄️

Most HVAC breakdowns don’t happen out of nowhere - they build up over seasons of skipped maintenance, forcing your system to work twice as hard.

Instead of waiting for an expensive mid-winter emergency call, take a proactive approach with the Performance Complete Plan.

Here’s why Oakville & Burlington homeowners are switching:

❄️ Total Year-Round Coverage: Comprehensive seasonal inspections for both heating and cooling.

🛠️ Proactive Repairs: Catch minor wear and tear before it turns into a $1,000+ emergency.

💳 The $200 Annual Bank: Unlike standard plans, $200 of your annual plan cost builds toward your next system replacement - up to $1,000 over 5 years.

You aren't just protecting your current equipment, you’re investing in your next one.

One plan. Two visits. A credit that keeps growing. 📈

💰 $299 / year

Introducing two ways to protect your home's comfort, with a credit that builds year after year. 🔧

Most maintenance plans work the same way. You pay every year, your system gets checked, and that's where it ends.

Ours don't stop there. Every year you're on an Essential or Performance plan, a credit builds toward your next heating or cooling system, up to $1,000 over five years on our top tier.

Performance plans start at $169/year, with 50% off diagnostic fees and credit up to $500 per system. Essential plans start at $129/year, with 25% off diagnostics and credit up to $250 per system.

Same idea at every level. Get maintained. Save on repairs. Build toward what's next.

A furnace doesn't usually fail without warning. It tells you first, if you know what to listen for.

Age is the first sign. Past 12 years, a furnace is working harder to do what it used to do easily, and the risk of a major failure starts climbing, especially without regular maintenance.

Rising repair bills are the second. One repair in a few years is normal. Paying for a service call every season isn't a coincidence, it's a pattern.

Uneven heating is the third. If some rooms never quite reach comfortable no matter the setting, the system is already struggling to keep up. 🔧

Any one of these on its own is worth a second look. More than one together usually means it's time for an honest assessment, not a guess over the phone. Book an assessment today.

The Excel standard isn't one person's job. It's everyone's. 🔧

For more than 30 years, that standard has come down to the people doing the work, not just the equipment going in.

Our customer service team makes sure customers understand something simple but easy to overlook: regular maintenance protects the equipment you already own.

Our installation team focuses on the details behind the scenes, the part most people never see, because a great system is only as good as the work that goes into installing it.

Whether it's a custom home, a commercial building, or a house down the street, the standard doesn't change. 🏠

30+ years of custom-home and commercial standards.
Proudly serving homeowners across Oakville and Burlington.

Heating. Cooling. Maintenance. Done properly.
