Thank you to IndigiNews for sharing the story of Nk’Mip Forestry’s large-scale planting work through Canada’s 2 Billion Trees Program.

More than 900,000 trees and native plants were planted across OIB territory in 2026, helping restore areas affected by wildfire and support long-term forest renewal.

Today, as Silviculture Project Lead with Siya Forestry, he supports forest renewal and native species restoration across Osoyoos Indian Band territory. He also serves as President and Chair of the Valemount Community Forest Board of Directors, bringing lessons from each role into the other.

Part of restoring forests after a wildfire includes planting trees to help the land recover, to support important wildlife habitat, and to create work opportunities for local community members.

Through the federal 2 Billion Trees Program, Nk'Mip Forestry, with support from Siya Forestry, planted more than 900,000 trees and native plants across Osoyoos Indian Band territory in 2026.

Supported by the Government of Canada, the project is helping restore wildfire-affected areas while supporting long-term forest stewardship.

Forestry work often begins months before a crew arrives on site.

In our latest Stewards of the Land feature, Aaron Froc, Project Lead with Infinity-Pacific Stewardship Group, shares what that planning looks like through his work supporting Siya Forestry across Osoyoos Indian Band territory.

Aaron’s role includes preparing site plans, wildfire risk reduction prescriptions, and restoration-related permitting. Much of that work is shaped by field time, consultation, and guidance from OIB to help ensure projects respect the values of the territory.

As Aaron shared, “Managing forests needs to look at more than just the timber because nothing in nature exists in isolation. Everything is connected.”

Siya Forestry was proud to be represented by Dan Macmaster, Peter Flett, and Dylan Savoie at the BC Community Forest Association Conference in Vernon.
Dan took part in two sessions focused on the future of community forestry, local decision-making, and the benefits community forests bring to communities across British Columbia.

In the first session, Dan moderated a discussion on how community forests define and share the value of their work. The conversation looked at benefits such as local employment, economic activity, stewardship, recreation, wildfire risk reduction, education, and community well-being. He also joined the Big Ideas Panel alongside other forestry leaders to discuss new ideas and opportunities for the future of the sector. The panel invited participants to think differently about how forestry can support healthy forests, strong communities, and long-term care for the land.

For Siya Forestry, these conversations connect closely to the values that guide the work of local leadership, Indigenous stewardship, community benefit, collaboration, and responsible forest management. Conferences like this are an important opportunity to learn from others, share ideas, and continue building a forestry future that supports both the land and the people connected to it.
