When I inspect a rodent problem in October, I don't just focus on where the homeowner found droppings or heard scratching.
I want to know how the mice got inside.
That means checking around the foundation, utility lines, vents, garage doors, pipes, and other small openings around the exterior of the home.
Inside, I also check storage areas and possible food sources to understand why the rodents are staying.
Dealing with the mice inside is only part of the job. If the entry point stays open, another mouse can use the same way in later.
With colder weather coming to the Greater Ottawa area, finding and correcting those access points becomes even more important.
