🔧 One spring broke. We replaced both. Here's why.

This is the question we get most often on spring calls: "Only one broke — why are you replacing both?"

It's a fair question, and it deserves a real answer.

Your torsion springs are installed as a matched pair. They were manufactured together, installed on the same day, and they've lifted your door the exact same number of times. Every single cycle, both springs shared the load equally.

So when one snaps, it didn't fail because it was defective. It failed because it reached the end of its cycle life. The other spring has been through identical wear — it's sitting at the exact same point on the fatigue curve. It's not a question of if it'll break, it's when. And "when" is usually within a few months.

Three reasons we always do both:

1️⃣ SAME AGE, SAME CYCLES
Springs are rated for a set number of cycles. If one hit its limit, the other is right behind it. Replacing just the broken one means you're running a brand new spring alongside one that's fully worn out.

2️⃣ MISMATCHED TENSION CAUSES DAMAGE
A new spring and an old spring don't pull with equal force. That imbalance drags the door up crooked, puts uneven load on the cables and drums, and forces your opener to work harder than it should. You end up wearing out other parts prematurely.

3️⃣ ONE SERVICE CALL, NOT TWO
The labour is identical whether we replace one spring or two — we're already up there with the winding bars and the door disconnected. Doing both now costs a fraction of what a second full service call costs in a few months.

While we're up there, we also check the cables, the centre bearing, the end bearings, and the drums — because those wear on the same schedule.

📚 September is coming. Your garage door knows it.

Something we notice every year: our call volume jumps in the first few weeks of September. It's not a coincidence.

Over the summer, most Ottawa families use the garage door 2 or 3 times a day. Come September? School drop-offs, pickups, hockey practice, dance, commutes back to the office — you're suddenly opening and closing that door 6 to 8 times a day, every day.

That's 2,000+ cycles a year, and it lands on parts that just spent an Ottawa winter dealing with salt, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles. Springs that were "fine" in July start snapping in October. Rollers that were "just a little noisy" turn into grinding. Cables that were slightly frayed give out.

Four things worth checking this week — takes about 5 minutes:

1️⃣ LISTEN
Run the door up and down. Grinding, scraping, or a slapping sound usually means worn rollers or a stripped opener gear.

2️⃣ LOOK
Check the lift cables on both sides for fraying or rust. Look along the sides and bottom for gaps, cracked rubber, or daylight coming through.

3️⃣ TEST THE BALANCE
Close the door, pull the red release cord, and lift it manually to about waist height. It should stay put. If it slams down or shoots up, your spring tension is off — call someone before it fails.

4️⃣ TEST THE SAFETY SENSORS
Start closing the door and wave a broom handle through the beam near the floor. It should reverse immediately. If it doesn't, your sensors need attention — this is the feature that protects kids and pets.

If anything on that list looks or sounds off, book it now. Once the fall rush hits, everyone's calling at once — and a broken spring on a Monday morning with kids to get to school is a bad way to start the week.

🔧 Grinding Opener? You Might Not Need a New One.

Every week we get calls that start the same way: "My opener is making a horrible grinding noise, I think I need a whole new unit." Nine times out of ten, that's not true.

Opened up this Ottawa opener recently and found exactly what we expected: the plastic drive gear — the small nylon gear that translates the motor's spin into the chain or belt movement — completely stripped and packed with years of old grease and dust. The motor itself? Perfectly fine.

Here's the part most homeowners don't know: openers are built with an intentionally weaker nylon gear as a sacrificial part. It's designed to strip and fail before the (much more expensive) motor takes damage from a jam or an overloaded door. It's a small, inexpensive part. It is NOT a reason to replace the whole opener.

Signs your gear kit is the problem, not the whole unit:
✔ Grinding or clicking noise when the door tries to move
✔ Motor runs (you can hear it) but the door doesn't move at all
✔ Door moves a few inches then stalls
✔ Chain or belt isn't advancing even though the motor is spinning

We always check the gear kit, capacitor, and circuit board before recommending a full replacement. If the fix is a small part and an hour of labour, that's what we tell you — full stop. We only recommend a new opener when the motor itself is failing, the unit is 15-20+ years old with multiple worn parts, or repair costs approach replacement cost.

🔧 Ever added it up?

Most Ottawa homeowners open their garage door 4–5 times a day — going to work, running errands, back and forth from the driveway. That's 1,500–2,000 cycles a year. On the same springs. On the same rollers. On the same seals.

Every mechanical part on your garage door has a lifespan. Here's roughly how it plays out on a typical Ottawa home:

🔹 Weather seals — 2 to 5 years
UV, ice, and road salt crack the rubber first. This is almost always the first thing homeowners notice — drafts, water, mice, or daylight along the edges.

🔹 Rollers — 5 to 7 years

🔧 Bottom Seal & Retainer Replacement — Ottawa Job

If cold air, rain, snowmelt, leaves, mice, or insects have been finding their way under your garage door — the bottom seal is done. It happens to every door eventually. UV, ice, salt, and time all break down the rubber, and the aluminum retainer that holds it in place rusts out right along with it.
