Always a fun one. Tough for clients to accept. **If you're a contractor and you say you can deliver on all 3 then you are probably not charging enough.

🏠 Homeowner PSA:

Ever notice those little circular bumps appearing on your drywall? Those are called screw pops, and they’re usually a sign of movement.

Why is this happening?

The "Deep Sink": The screw was driven too deep, breaking the paper face of the drywall and losing its grip.

Settling: The house is moving/settling, and the drywall is shifting against the stud.

Drying Wood: In new construction, the wooden studs often dry out and shrink over time, pushing the screw out.

The Wrong Hardware: This is the big one! Using the wrong thread type from the get-go (not "gecko" 🦎) is a recipe for failure.

Coarse vs. Fine Threads:
Coarse Thread Screws: Use these for wood studs. They have a wider bite and hold much better in lumber.
Fine Thread Screws: These are designed specifically for metal studs (common in basements or commercial buildings).

The Fix: 🛠️
Don't just try to mud over the pop—it’ll likely come back. The best bet is to:
Drive a new coarse-thread screw about 2 inches above or below the pop.
Remove the old screw or drive it back in if it still has a "bite."
Patch both holes with joint compound, sand, and paint.

Doing it right the first time (or fixing it correctly the second time) means you won't have to look at those bumps ever again!

It’s a beautiful, spring-like day in Ottawa today! ☀️ While we are all enjoying the sunshine and warmer air, this is the prime time for some critical home maintenance to keep your property safe as the snow melts.
Here are a few things to keep an eye on today:

Foundation Check: Melting water sitting around your foundation is never a good thing. It needs a clear path to run away from the house. If you can, make sure your eavestrough bottoms (downspouts) are visible and clear of snow—just don't dig too much!

Window Wells: These often get packed with ice and snow. If water pools in there, it can seep through the window, which is a big problem for your basement.

Outdoor Spigots: If you’re planning on running a hose today, keep an eye on the pipe in the basement. They can split over the winter, and as soon as you repressurize the line, you might see water creeping out.
We love being there for you during emergencies, but we’d much rather help you avoid them altogether!

If you need MGL for anything, we are open for business to handle renovations big and small. And certainly, if you do run into water damage, give us a shout. I’ll personally assess the situation and give you some no-charge advice on the best way to handle it—whether you want us to deal with it directly or go through your insurance company

If you’re remodeling a bathroom floor, pay close attention to fl**ge height. The fl**ge should sit at or just slightly above the finished floor—not buried below it. Fixing it properly during renovation can prevent thousands of dollars in water damage later.

A small detail. A big difference.
