The 9% Rule: When water trapped in your soil freezes, it expands by 9%, acting like a hydraulic jack that pushes your pavers UP—this is Heaving If your pavers are SINKING, you’re likely dealing with Settling caused by base failure or poor compaction
Try these 3 Pro Tests:
The Water Test: Pour water on the spot. If it sheds away, it’s a Heave. If it puddles into a "birdbath," it’s Settling
The Direction Test: Raised humps = Heaving. Sunken dips = Settling
The Seasonal Test: If it gets worse in winter but "self-corrects" in summer, it’s frost-related Heaving
