Wild parsnip can cause more than a rash — it can cause painful burns.

This invasive plant is commonly found along roadsides, ditches, fence lines, trails, fields, and overgrown areas throughout Eastern Ontario. Its sap can react with sunlight and cause blistering, burns, skin irritation, and long-lasting discoloration.

If you see wild parsnip, avoid touching or cutting it with exposed skin. Wear gloves, long sleeves, pants, eye protection, and closed-toe footwear when working near overgrown vegetation.

If contact is suspected:
• Wash skin right away with soap and cool water
• Cover the area from sunlight
• Clean clothing, gloves, tools, and equipment
