What Is Mold-Resistant Drywall? (And Do You Need It?)

Mold-resistant drywall often called "green board" or "purple board" is a type of gypsum board designed to hold up in high-moisture areas.

How it's different from regular drywall:
Coated with a moisture-resistant paper or fiberglass facing (instead of standard paper, which mold loves to feed on)
Core is treated to resist water absorption
Slows mold and mildew growth even when humidity is high

Where it's typically used:
Bathrooms and powder rooms
Basements
Laundry rooms
Kitchens (near sinks/dishwashers)

Good to know:
It's moisture-resistant, not waterproof — it still needs proper ventilation and shouldn't be installed in direct-splash zones (like inside a shower — that calls for cement board instead)
It costs a bit more than standard drywall, but far less than dealing with mold remediation later

In Ottawa's humid summers and damp basements, it's one of the simplest upgrades homeowners can make during a renovation.

🌳 A Tree Just Came Down On Your House. Now What?
Here's exactly what to do.

⚠️ IF A TREE HITS YOUR HOME

1️⃣ Get everyone out first. Don't go back in for belongings.
2️⃣ If the tree is touching a power line — stay back 10 metres. Call 911 and Hydro Ottawa. Never touch it.
3️⃣ Do NOT climb up to look. Roof decking can be compromised even when the shingles look fine.
4️⃣ Photograph everything BEFORE any cleanup. Your insurer will ask.
5️⃣ Call your insurance company, then book a proper damage inspection.
6️⃣ Tarp it only if you can do it safely from the ground.

📌 If it's a City-owned tree on the boulevard, report it to 3-1-1.

🌲 IF YOU THINK A TREE IS CRACKED OR FAILING

Don't wait for it to fall. Watch for:

⚠️ A new lean, or soil lifting at the base
⚠️ Vertical splits or cracks in the trunk
⚠️ Bare branches in the middle of summer
⚠️ Mushrooms or fungus at the base — that's internal rot
⚠️ Heavy limbs hanging over your roofline

✅ Get a certified arborist to assess it — not a handyman with a chainsaw.
✅ Keep branches trimmed at least 3 metres back from the roof.
✅ Inspect your roof, soffit, fascia and eavestrough after every major storm.

The damage you can't see is the one that costs you. A lifted shingle or a bent eavestrough today becomes a ceiling leak by spring.

We inspect roofs, siding, soffit, fascia and eavestrough across Ottawa — and if it's fine, we'll tell you it's fine.
