A retaining wall can look perfect and solid on the day it’s finished. What matters is what happens after years of rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and pressure from the soil behind it.

A properly built retaining wall starts with the base. The soil underneath needs to be excavated and replaced with a compacted base that creates a stable foundation for the wall above.

It’s one of those parts of landscape construction you’ll never see once the project is finished, but it can make a major difference in how that wall performs over time.

When you’re planning a retaining wall or landscape project for your Ottawa home, don’t just look at the finished product. Ask how the base is being prepared and what’s being done underneath before the first block is installed.

What you don’t see is often what makes it last.

Come see us at the Ottawa Fall Home and Garden Show.

We’d love to walk through your project with you in person.
Our amazing landscape designer Ben Stapper walks through part of his process: layout first. How the space flows, the different zones, how you move between them, and what each one is actually for. Then the features, things like pools, entertaining spaces, and outdoor kitchens. One thing people almost always miss is night lighting. It’s what keeps a property feeling alive after dark, and through the winter months when everything else goes quiet.

If you’re thinking about a project this year, this is the easiest way to start the conversation.

A beautiful fall planter isn’t just about choosing a few plants with autumn colours.

When we’re putting together seasonal fall planters for our clients in Ottawa, we’re thinking about how each plant works with the others. Height creates structure, different textures add contrast, and even the foliage itself contributes colour to the finished arrangement.

And then there’s Ottawa’s fall weather.

A fall planter can typically carry you through late October into early November, but ultimately, the first hard frost will have a say in how long it lasts. How far along the plants are when they’re installed can make a difference too, and with the right conditions, you may even get another bloom from some plants.

Swipe through for a closer look at how we use fountain grass, mums, ornamental cabbage and celosia to bring together height, colour and texture in a seasonal planter.

Our team is currently out installing fall planters for clients across Ottawa. If you’d like to add some seasonal colour to your property this fall, reach out to the Wild Ridge team to learn more.

The annual Wild Ridge Golf Tournament. The predictions were bold.

There were some great shots, and some creative ones.

Since getting started 15 years ago, we’ve grown, taken on countless projects across Ottawa, welcomed new faces to the team, and had a lot of people leave their mark on what Wild Ridge has become.

We traded job sites for the golf course, spent the day together, and eventually found out which team could actually back up those early predictions.

Wild Ridge wouldn’t be where it is today without the people who show up every day, take pride in their work, and care about what we build together.

To everyone who has been part of our team over the last 15 years, and to our clients across Ottawa who have trusted us along the way, thank you.

A herringbone pattern helps pavers resist movement because each paver is supported against its neighbours on two sides. That makes it a strong choice for areas that see turning traffic and heavier loads, like driveways and entrances.

It takes more time to install properly, especially when it comes to making the cuts and keeping the borders clean. But those details matter when you want your interlock to look good and perform well long after installation day.

If you’re planning a new landscape, driveway, or entrance for your Ottawa home, don’t just ask what will look best. Ask why certain materials, patterns, and installation methods are being recommended for your property.

Good landscape construction starts with decisions that have a reason behind them.

If you take pride in how your property looks, the little details matter.

It’s more than simply cutting the grass. A clean trim, crisp edges, a thorough cleanup, and even the pattern left behind in your lawn all contribute to how your property looks when the work is finished.

For this Ottawa property, our maintenance team double mowed the lawn to create a diamond pattern, carefully trimmed around the property, and finished everything off with a thorough blow and cleanup.

The goal is simple. When you come home, your property looks its best.

When choosing plants for a seasonal fall planter, consider a mix of colour, height, texture, and trailing elements. Fall mums can bring rich seasonal colour, while purple fountain grass or millet can add height and movement. Ornamental peppers and cabbage add another layer of colour and texture, while trailing plants like English ivy or sedums can help soften the edges and create a fuller arrangement.

The goal is to bring these different elements together into a fall planter that feels balanced and complements your home and the surrounding landscape.

Toward the end of September, our Wild Ridge team will be installing seasonal fall planters for some of our clients across Ottawa, with each arrangement thoughtfully put together to complement the property and colours of the season.
