Looking back at a milestone moment! 🏘️✨

Earlier this year, we were invited to celebrate the grand opening of 20 Dunbar, bringing 31 new net-zero ready affordable apartments to the Woodvale/Craig Henry/Manordale community in Nepean.

As we look back at the grand opening celebration, we aren't just celebrating a new building - we're celebrating the families and individuals who now have a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Seeing this project come to life over the past few years has been the greatest reward. The success is thanks to everyone who collaborated from conception to construction, including the Nepean Housing Corporation, McDonald Brothers Construction, Engineering Consultants, and funding agents at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.

Before and After | Design That Fits

The spaces in this 1990's townhouse were transformed from heavy and enclosed to airy, bright and interconnected spaces.

The goal was maximizing natural light in the centre spaces of the home by stripping back the dated, builder-grade finishes and revealing the true potential of the existing spaces.

Here are the key components that brought this space to life:
▶️ Staircase Retrofit: enclosed stairs were opened up, introducing custom floor to ceiling maple slats to create an architectural screen while allowing light to filter through.
▶️ Form Meets Function: the unused space beneath the stairs was reclaimed with custom built-in shelves that make use of the full depth for layered storage.
▶️ Cohesive Finishes: Heavy carpets and dull grey walls were swapped for engineered maple hardwood and warm white walls and ceilings, visually expanding the spaces and reflecting the natural light.
▶️ Elevated Bathrooms: Existing bathrooms were completely gutted and reconfigured into spa retreats featuring vertical wood grain wall tile and large format terrazzo style flooring.

By focusing on clean lines, warm wood accents, and spatial connectivity, we've completely changed the way this home feels and functions.

Earlier this summer we attended a Passive House Canada tour of a new supportive housing development in Ottawa. It was inspiring to see sustainable architecture and social responsibility come together in such a thoughtful way.

As the demand for supportive and affordable housing continues to increase, this new development provides long-term housing for those who face mental health or substance abuse challenges while offering support with on-site services from Ottawa Salus.

On the tour we had the chance to see some of the unique spaces:
➡️Culturally Integrated Community Room: The sculptural wood ceiling and natural light create an inviting, calming atmosphere.
➡️Gallery of Hope: A wonderful reminder of the purpose behind this development - providing not just housing, but inviting spaces that foster dignity and healing.
➡️Flexibility in Barrier-Free Design: Fully accessible kitchens and open-concept bachelor units don't just provide accessibility, they prioritize it.

It was a privilege to walk through the entire building and learn about the passive house principles that were incorporated into the design, resulting in a super-insulated, airtight building with occupant comfort at the forefront.

Sustainable architecture is essential for building a more resilient, compassionate future. More of this, please! 🙌

Before and After | Design That Fits

This one storey kitchen was rebuilt with plenty of windows overlooking the private rear yard garden. The new covered porch and terrace are perfect for a quiet morning coffee surrounded by nature in the heart of the city.

3 new townhomes, born from one empty urban lot — each with its own garage, multiple terraces, and light-filled interiors. All steps from some of the best restaurants in town!

Have you ever been inside the Library and Archives Canada building📚? Built in 1967 by Mathers and Haldenby, the fenestration and building massing are signature characteristics to this structure. The interior marble tiling, brass details and gold mosaic accents work harmoniously to elevate the space.

While portions of the building are open for public access, Doors Open Ottawa allowed people to explore the typically restricted 7th floor used for storage and preservation. The small punched windows are purposefully sized to reduce the damaging impact of sunlight on the archived items while maintaining beautiful views to Parliament and LeBreton Flats.
