Got dog strangling vine, creeping bellflower, or buckthorn?

Do you regret planting periwinkle, lily of the valley, daylilies, barberry, or burning bush, or did they come with your home?

We offer personalized invasive species action plans that balance practical action with the highest risks of ecological harm.

We are pleased to now also offer a small team of mighty gardeners, all being extensively trained in evidence-based invasive species removal.

Once you have your action plan, you can book our team once or schedule regular visits over a longer period of time to get the right support for your situation.

We also offer one-on-one consultations to teach practical techniques, from identification to monitoring, and offer hands on workshops for community groups.

We're currently booking into mid July and are especially prioritizing those in central and eastern Ottawa.

It's been a privilege to work on this property over the last two years, helping my client continue to convert it into a wildlife haven. We successfully removed creeping bellflower from the side yard, designed and installed a woodland garden in the backyard (with more to come), and this week, we finalized the front yard lawn conversion and installed hundreds of sedges, grasses, perennials, spring ephemerals, and shrubs under an incredible red oak.

All plants selected for the garden are native to the Ottawa region except the endangered wood poppy.

After a few days of no rain last week, my own garden was ready for a trim. Most plant stems were still standing tall, showing off their beautiful seedheads. They gave my family, my neighbours, and the local wildlife beauty and habitat through last fall, winter, and early spring. But the new growth is emerging.

Starting in the warmest, sunniest pockets with the most new growth, I cut back last year's stems by chopping them into 4" to 8" pieces and letting those pieces fall into the garden beds.

This chop and drop method adds nutrients and organic matter back to the soil, avoiding the need for adding amendments and mulch every year. Theoretically, my gardening is done for the year.

The juncos and goldfinches continue to forage for seeds as they have all winter. The mourning doves and sparrows look for nesting materials. I watch for the white trillium and pulsatilla flowers to open and wait to welcome the insects still safely nestled in the garden.

Dreaming of a complete garden transformation?

Bookings for Spring 2027 installations are now open. Contact us this April or May to reserve your design spot for July or August.

Every project starts with a thorough site assessment and design consultation, followed by a proposed design tailored to your property. Our window for this process is summer 2026.

Once the design is approved, plants are sourced from local partners or custom-grown from nurseries such as for delivery and installation in May or early June 2027.

This timeline matters. Seed must be sourced with preference for local ecotype where there is availability, many species need cold, moist stratification for months, and growers need time to grow strong, healthy plants for installation.

There's a shortage in seed supply and rapidly increasing demand for native plants, so sourcing in advance is critical!

Before installation, some gardens also need extensive preparation work. Prep may include sod removal or suppression, garden bed creation, removal and giveaway of undesired plants, and especially, invasive species removal. This work takes place in the summer, fall, and early spring before installation.

Message us today or visit our website through the link in our bio to find out more and to secure your place.

Same plant, same place. Bird song and air conditioners. Howling winds and teenagers laughing. We love the sounds and sights of both winter and summer.

A beautiful evening in Richelieu Park's Sugar Shack last night. It was a privilege to talk to residents who are ready to take action removing invasive species and restoring native ecosystems in this precious forest.

Thank you to Yves and Nick at the wonderful Muséoparc Vanier, to Lisa, Debby, Chris, and the other dedicated committee members and board at the Vanier Community Association / L’Association communautaire de Vanier, to the City of Ottawa's Forestry Department, and to our Councillor Stéphanie Plante - Rideau Vanier whose committment to the social, economic, and environmental impact of invasive species in our city is inspiring. I'm thrilled to be a part of this local, collaborative, and visionary effort for the restoration and preservation of this beautiful urban forest. -Christina

Monday at 7pm at the Sugar Shack in Vanier's Richelieu Park, join us to learn about invasive species. How to identify which plants are invasive, how to remove them successfully, and how to replant with native species effectively yet beautifully.
