Looking for hardworking people who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves!

Pilon Landworks is looking for reliable, motivated individuals to join our team for the busy fall cleanup season, with the opportunity to continue working through the winter.

We're not just looking for people to fill a few weeks of work. We'd love to find people who enjoy working outdoors, take pride in a job well done, and want to be part of a team for more than one season.

What You'll Be Doing

Assisting with residential and commercial fall property cleanups
Raking, blowing, collecting, and removing leaves and yard debris
Cutting back gardens and preparing properties for winter
Loading and unloading equipment and materials
Working alongside our crew to complete jobs efficiently and safely
Opportunity to transition into snow removal and winter property maintenance

What We're Looking For

A strong work ethic and a positive attitude
Dependability — someone who shows up on time and is ready to work
The ability to handle physically demanding work in changing weather conditions
A team player who is willing to pitch in wherever needed
Someone who takes pride in doing quality work
Previous landscaping experience is an asset, but a willingness to learn and work hard is just as important
Must have a driver's license and reliable transportation

What We Offer

Starting wage of $25.00 per hour
Immediate work during our busy fall cleanup season

Welcome to Freeze-Thaw Season

One of the trickier parts of an Ottawa winter isn't necessarily the amount of snow we receive.

It's what happens when temperatures can't make up their mind.

Above freezing.

Below freezing.

Above again.

Then back below.

Water from melting snow and ice can move across a property, collect in low areas and refreeze when the temperature drops.

That's the freeze-thaw cycle, and we'll be seeing plenty of it over the coming months.

For homeowners, businesses and property managers, winter property maintenance isn't simply a matter of clearing snow.

Ice and changing conditions are part of the equation too.

What Happens If Leaves Stay on Your Lawn All Winter?

A few leaves aren't necessarily a problem.

A thick, wet layer sitting on your lawn all winter can be.

Once leaves become wet and matted, they can block light and airflow to the grass underneath. Add months of snow cover, and you've created conditions your lawn may not appreciate.

That's one reason fall leaf cleanup isn't only about making a property look tidy.

You don't need to panic every time another leaf hits the ground.

But you also don't want to send your lawn into an Ottawa winter buried under a heavy blanket of wet leaves.

Sometimes there's a happy medium between chasing every last leaf and ignoring them completely.

You wake up, look outside, and everything is covered in frost.

Is that it for the lawn?

Not necessarily.

A frost doesn't automatically mean your grass has gone dormant for the season.

One thing you should avoid, however, is heavy traffic on a frost-covered lawn. When grass blades are frozen, walking or driving equipment over them can damage the plant tissue.

Give the frost time to melt before getting to work.

October lawn care is often less about following a schedule and more about paying attention to the conditions.

And in Ottawa, those conditions can change pretty quickly.

It's October. Shouldn't the lawn be done by now?

Not necessarily.

Grass doesn't follow the calendar.

As long as conditions remain favourable, your lawn can continue growing well into the fall. Growth will gradually slow as temperatures drop, and eventually the lawn will head into dormancy.

That's why you may still need to pull out the lawn mower in October.

One mistake homeowners sometimes make is assuming that once September ends, lawn cutting ends with it.

Let the lawn — and the weather — tell you when the season is over.

October in Ottawa can be a bit unpredictable.

One day you're outside in a T-shirt. A few days later, there's frost on the grass.

Add in rain, wind, falling leaves and the possibility of an early snowfall, and October becomes a real changeover month for your property.

It's also when our work begins to change.

We're still taking care of lawns, gardens and fall cleanups, but we're also looking ahead to colder temperatures and eventually snow.

And now we're heading into the heart of fall-cleanup season.
