MY FAVOURITE DEER-RESISTANT, FIRESMART PLANTS 🔥

Living in the Okanagan often means planning for both wildfire resilience and hungry deer. Fortunately, we do not have to sacrifice a beautiful garden!

🏠 IMMEDIATE ZONE: 0–1.5 METRES

No plants belong in this zone.
Use gravel, stone, concrete or pavers to create a clean, non-combustible area around your home, deck and other structures.

🌿 INTERMEDIATE ZONE: 1.5–10 METRES

Choose low-growing, well-spaced plants and remove dead material regularly.

My favourites:

🌸 Yarrow
🌸 Peony
🌸 Coral bells
🌸 Bearded iris
🌸 Stonecrop sedum
🌸 Hens and chicks

🌳 EXTENDED ZONE: 10–30 METRES
Larger shrubs and deciduous trees can be used here with thoughtful spacing and regular maintenance.

My favourites:

🌿 Ninebark
🌿 Potentilla
🌿 Snowberry
🌿 Mock orange
🌿 Lilac

🌳 Honey locust
🌳 Maple

Remember, no plant is completely fireproof or completely deer-proof. Deer resistance can vary depending on the season, the local herd and available food.

Good plant selection, proper spacing and regular maintenance work together to create a safer, more resilient landscape.

CREATING DEFENSIBLE SPACE WITH CARE AND CAUTION

FireSmart landscaping is not about stripping properties bare or removing every tree, shrub and garden bed. It is about thoughtfully managing the space around our homes to reduce the opportunity for embers and flames to reach structures.
Defensible space is divided into three important areas:

🏠 IMMEDIATE ZONE: 0–1.5 METRES
Keep this area as non-combustible as possible. Use gravel, stone, pavers or concrete. Avoid bark mulch, woody shrubs and combustible materials directly against your home, deck or other structures.

🌿 INTERMEDIATE ZONE: 1.5–10 METRES
Choose well-spaced, lower-growing plants and keep them healthy and hydrated. Remove dry grass, fallen needles, dead branches and other debris that could allow fire to travel toward your home.

🌲 EXTENDED ZONE: 10–30 METRES
Reduce dense vegetation, prune lower tree branches and create space between trees and plant groupings. The goal is to slow a fire and reduce its intensity—not to clear the landscape completely.
FireSmart changes should always be made with care. Excessive clearing can increase erosion, expose soil, encourage invasive weeds and remove valuable wildlife habitat. Every property is different, and factors such as slope, wind exposure, neighbouring vegetation and existing structures should all be considered.

No plant is completely fireproof. Plant selection matters, but thoughtful placement, spacing and ongoing maintenance are equally important.
A defensible landscape can still be beautiful, biodiverse and full of life. The goal is to reduce risk while continuing to care for the land around us.

🌿 Wise Roots is Building Our Team! 🌿

Wise Roots Consulting is growing, and I’m looking for the right people to grow with it.

These positions will begin as contracted, project-based work, with the goal of developing into full-time employment as the company grows.

🌱 DESIGN ASSISTANT

I’m looking for someone organized, resourceful and great with the behind-the-scenes details that keep landscape design projects moving.

Responsibilities may include:

• Material sourcing and supplier research
• Building and maintaining current material price lists
• Plant and product sourcing
• Gathering specifications, pricing and availability
• Assisting with site measurements
• Organizing project and design information
• Supporting projects as they move from design into installation

Experience or education in landscape design, horticulture, construction materials or a related field is an asset.

🌿 LANDSCAPE INSTALLER / FUTURE LANDSCAPE LEAD

I’m looking for an experienced landscape professional who can initially work alongside me on installations, maintenance and project work, with the opportunity to grow into a leadership position.

Experience should include a combination of:

• Landscape installation
• Garden and property maintenance
• Planting and bed preparation
• Pruning and plant care
• Hardscape installation
• Excavation and site preparation
• Grading and material movement
• Soil, mulch, gravel and rock installation
• General landscape construction

Proficiency operating machinery is a strong asset, including:

• Skid steer
• Mini excavator
• Loader
• Other landscape and construction equipment

Applicants must be dependable, capable of working independently when required and comfortable working outdoors in Okanagan conditions.

A reliable vehicle suitable for landscape work is required.

This position is intended to grow into a Landscape Lead role, with the opportunity to oversee installations, manage projects and eventually run a small crew.

Both positions will begin with contracted work while we build the workload and determine fit, with the intention of transitioning the right people into more consistent and eventually full-time employment.

I’m not simply looking for extra hands. I’m looking for people who take pride in their work, pay attention to detail, communicate well and want the opportunity to grow alongside a developing landscape company.

To apply, please send a full resume outlining your relevant education, work experience, skills and qualifications, along with a brief introduction and the position you are applying for.

Friend or Foe? IPM Edition 🐛

Spotted this little guy today🔍

Meet the woolly bear caterpillar doing its fuzzy little patrol through the catmint.

Wise Roots verdict: Mild foe

Threat level: 🟢 1/5 — Low

Yes, it can nibble foliage a bit, but one woolly bear is usually more of a monitor situation than a panic situation. On an established plant, the damage is typically minor.
This is exactly where IPM — Integrated Pest Management — comes in.

At Wise Roots, that means we do not jump straight to treatment. We ask:
• What is it?
• How many are there?
• How much damage is actually happening?
• Is action even needed?

A single caterpillar does not automatically equal a problem. Sometimes it is just a hungry visitor passing through the garden.

Wise Roots tip:
If you only see one and the plant is otherwise healthy, the best move is usually to observe, monitor, and relocate only if needed.

Good gardening is not about wiping out every insect. It is about learning which ones matter, when they matter, and when to simply let nature do its thing.
