Three Sisters is a social enterprise founded by Carlotta James & Megan Boyles who are passionate about native gardens and plants. Three Sisters creates natural landscapes, including pollinator-friendly gardens for home-owners & businesses in Peterborough and surrounding areas. Three Sisters emerged from Peterborough Pollinators, a citizen-led initiative committed to building pollinator pathways throughout the City of Peterborough.

The Autumn Showstopper You Can’t Touch: Monkshood

As the rest of the autumn landscape begins to fade into quiet shades of amber and brown, one plant stands tall to deliver a final, dramatic burst of electric energy: Monkshood (Aconitum).

Boasting incredibly striking, deep violet-blue saturated tones, these towering, unique hooded flowers look like something straight out of a dark fairytale. They provide an unmatched architectural structure to any late-season fall garden, blooming proudly when most other flowers have already gone to sleep.

But beneath its enchanting royal appearance lies a legendary, dark secret: Monkshood is one of the most toxic plants you can grow! (And one of my favourites!)

From summer blooms to fall beauty!

We’re thrilled to revisit the pollinator gardens we designed and built this summer and see them coming to life! Now it’s time for a little fall maintenance to keep these beautiful, biodiversity-supporting spaces thriving!

Taking centre stage is Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), showing off its stunning shades of pink, purple, and blue. These native grasses bring incredible colour & texture to the autumn landscape while providing valuable habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.

ALIEN INVASION: THE BOTANICAL EDITION

Meet the coneflower rosette mite!

This echinacea flower head looks like a tiny red alien creature having a very bad hair day. But behind that wild, spiky look might be a microscopic troublemaker!

The dirt on rosette mites: These tiny mites are so small you’ll need more than your garden-variety eyeballs to spot them. They feed around the growing flower buds, causing the florets to become crowded, distorted, and downright extraterrestrial-looking. The result? A coneflower that looks less like a flower and more like a botanical monster from a sci-fi movie. If you suspect rosette mites, remove affected flower heads and dispose of them in the trash. Keep an eye on nearby echinaceas, too!

Returning from a landscape project in Keene, we came across something truly beautiful and unexpected. Along the edge of a farmer’s field, hundreds of pieces of driftwood had been thoughtfully gathered and arranged to create a natural fence border.

What a wonderful expression of creativity and connection to the land. Something shaped by time, water, and the elements has been given a new purpose, transforming what might otherwise be overlooked into something remarkable.

There is a quiet beauty in every weathered curve, every texture, and every silvery tone. Each piece of driftwood tells a story - the story of a once magnificent tree that stood tall, reached for the sky, and lived through countless seasons before its journey eventually carried it to this field.

As someone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world and the stories held within it, I found this simple yet extraordinary border inspiring! Sometimes, the most beautiful things are not manufactured or designed to be perfect. They are found, gathered, and given a second life.

Completely in love with this native grass - Panicum Prairie Fire!

Panicum virgatum ‘Prairie Fire’ transforms into a striking display of bright yellow and deep wine-red tones during the fall season. It also features a fibrous, deep root system reaching up to 10 feet into the soil, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant once established.

We designed & built this garden in 2019, with the intention of supporting pollinators in every season!

What a beautiful sight this year to see monarch butterflies in all the gardens we’ve been building & maintaining! The monarchs you see right now are getting ready for their long journey south to Mexico, where they overwinter in the forests of central Mexico.

Come and celebrate the majestic monarch butterfly at the annual Monarch Festival this Saturday, Sept. 19th at Millennium Park!

From Lawns to Life!

Imagine if more front lawns in our neighbourhoods, especially in subdivisions where gardens are few and far between, were transformed into thriving pollinator gardens.

Instead of a sea of grass, we could have native flowers buzzing with bees, butterflies moving from bloom to bloom, birds searching for seeds, and entire little ecosystems coming to life.

Pollinator gardens provide essential food and habitat for bees, butterflies, and countless other insects. And when we connect gardens throughout a neighbourhood, we create a network of habitat that can make a real difference for wildlife.

And we’re incredibly proud of what’s happening here in the Kawarthas. This year alone, we’ve built close to 80 pollinator gardens! Over the past 10 years, that number has grown to more than 500 gardens throughout southern Ontario!

Let’s keep turning lawns into life, one garden at a time.
