One of our current renovation projects in Picton, Ontario. We’ve been busy taking this house back down to the bones — and uncovering exactly why performance matters.

Behind the old siding we found what too many homes are hiding:
water-damage, compromised joists, and insulation that had completely lost its effectiveness. Once moisture gets in, that old assembly doesn’t dry — it just slowly rots and leaks heat.

That means:
• higher heating bills
• cold drafts and uneven temperatures
• ongoing repair costs that keep coming back

Not to mention mould, animal and insect entry points…

And the materials we removed weren’t helping:
Vinyl siding and poorly detailed layers can trap moisture, while petroleum-based products come with a higher environmental footprint and don’t age well once water gets involved.

So we’re rebuilding it differently — with durability and sustainability in mind:

• Damaged wood removed and properly repaired (not covered up)
• Fully taped weather barrier for a true air seal
• Exterior mineral wool insulation that is vapor-open, fire-resistant, and built to last
• Rainscreen gap so the wall can actually drain and dry
• Switching to pine board & batten — renewable, repairable, and lower impact.

This isn’t just an upgrade — it’s a shift:
from a shell that traps moisture and wastes energy
to one that breathes, dries, and performs.

Better for the house.
Better for energy bills.
Better for the planet.

Can’t wait to see this beauty age well!

At Aerecura Sustainable Builders, we believe the way we build matters. From rammed earth construction to energy retrofits and sustainable renovations, every project we take on is an opportunity to work *with* the planet, not against it.

Natural materials. Timeless design. Future-forward thinking. Our homes are high performance, durable, and beautiful not just because our clients deserve the best but because our shared home does too.

Because sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s a responsibility. And we for the earth, with the earth.

RAMMED EARTH WORKSHOP @ PAPERKITE FARM

New this year, we’re adding an additional two-day, hands-on rammed earth workshop at .farm on September 12–13.

This workshop invites participants to learn how to design and build using traditional rammed earth techniques alongside Aerecura co-founder and master builder Graham Cavalier.

Together, we’ll construct a permanent rammed earth retaining wall for Judy and Hans’s farm, contributing to its evolving landscape in a meaningful and lasting way that reflects their continued dedication to sustainability and bio sequestering.

Participants will also have the option to enjoy a fresh lunch sourced directly from the market garden and tuck shop.

This workshop is eligible for OAA Continuing Education credits.

Spots are limited to just 20 participants to ensure a fully hands-on experience—register early to secure your place.

RAMMED EARTH WORKSHOP @ DROPSEED NURSERY
We’re excited to be returning to .pec this August long weekend for a two-day, hands-on rammed earth workshop.
Join Aerecura co-founder and master builder Graham Cavalier to learn how to design and build using traditional rammed earth techniques. Participants will gain practical, on-site experience while contributing to a permanent structure—the beginnings of Dropseed’s rammed earth greenhouse.
This workshop is eligible for OAA Continuing Education credits.
Spots are limited to just 20 participants to ensure a fully hands-on experience—register early to secure your place.

Careful planning, tight coordination, and a lot of precision went into making sure our client got exactly what they wanted — the outdoor shower of their dreams.

With rammed earth, there’s no trapped moisture and nowhere for mould to grow. The wall dries naturally in the sun, then holds onto that warmth — radiating it back so even an outdoor shower feels a little more comfortable.
Just rammed earth doing exactly what it’s meant to do.

Rammed earth season is here — and we’re kicking it off with something special.

We created the Aerecura workshop to build our very first off-site rammed earth project for installation on the ’s Lassonde Art Trail.

These forms are being built from designs Pedro created to echo the sculptural language and intent of Kara Hamilton’s piece — translating art into earth, material into story. We cannot wait to see the final piece revealed on the Trail.

This workshop marks the beginning of something bigger for us: a space to explore, test, and create. Expect more small-scale rammed earth installations, design-driven pieces, and collaborations to come, and follow along with us and as the Art Trail expands.
