White Oak privacy wall/room division.

This solid white oak wall was built and installed for our friends over the summer. The wall creates a nook hiding the bed from view of the master hallway and creating a division to a new space. The slat wall turns and continues running behind the bed situated almost in the middle of the room and allows for an open concept closet/dressing area behind.

The slats are installed on a 45 degree angle with a slight overlap to allow light from the sliding doors, and the windows behind the chairs on the left of the picture to fill the dressing area behind the wall, while still creating enough obstruction from the majority of the room to make it feel private. The wall is terminated on either end by a single board perpendicular to the top and bottom plates.

It's an impressive design and I'm thrilled to be the one who was asked to bring it to life.

Lets talk hinge placement! 👌🔥

Here's how I mount 4.5" hinges (overkill I know, designers choice) on solid 1 3/4" x 8' doors. Every job I do gets it's own custom made hinge jig specific for the door and its visual details, hinge size, etc.

Hinges on standard doors from pre hung shops are mounted at set heights regardless of door detail. Usually that's around 7" down from the top, 10" up from the bottom, and then spaced out equally in the middle with no care for where they meet details on the slab.

For this door package I placed the first hinge just below the top rail, the two middle hinges centered on the middle rails, and then the bottom hinge just above the bottom rail. The spacing is not equal between each hinge, but it is symmetrical. From the top of the door to the first hinge is around 4", first hinge to second is 20", second to third is 24", third to fourth is 20", and 4th to the bottom of the door is around 9".

In the end what you get is something you wouldn't really notice at first glance but you can feel when you're in the space. Here we have no weird visual steps, nothing is slightly off from one line to the next to the point where you can't figure out why it feels off, you just know it is. It's clean, and balanced. This, to me, is happiness.

Biscuits anyone? 🍪

Biscuits are an oval-shaped, highly dried and compressed wooden disc that is covered with glue and immediately placed in the slot. The two boards are clamped together and the wet glue expands the biscuit, further improving the bond.

I don't always use them for joining miters, but it is an option brought up during pricing. I highly suggest it if you're moving beyond basic MDF trim and you're going the route of a two part casing and backband in solid poplar. The guarantee of a strong connection is well worth it! The joint is far stronger with a biscuit due to the larger surface area in contact with the adhesive, and because glue is now in contact with the face grain of the wood, which accepts glue much better than the end grain in the miter.

There are adhesives that hold end grain well, but I'm a fan of the slow setting Titebond3 so I can manipulate the joint to get it exactly how I want it without racing the glue.

After the joint has been aligned and secured, the joint is wiped clean with a wet rag, and once dry it's sanded perfectly flat if there were any inconsistencies in the two pieces before the backband is installed.

An organized work site is an efficient work site! 🙌

I love a good clean, organized set up. I never realized in the past how much time I spent looking for things or tripping over tangled cords, cut offs, and hoses! Remember that you're working in someone's home. Finished or not, show it respect. It makes a difference to the owner on their weekend site visits.

It needs to be known that nothing here was done by mistake on the part of Manny and Jim.
1- they didn't intervene when the conversation got inappropriate.
2- they joined in on the misogyny.
3- they decided the recorded audio was appropriate to post to a podcast.
4- when simply displayed what they released they got butt hurt.
5- instead of simply apologizing they thought "let's sue her, were big men so we must beat her into submission"
6- they actually went through with a law suit. That's not a 1 minute decision to action event if you didn't know. This was thought about and decided upon. They had plenty of time not to go through with it.
7- and this is the most important part. The only reason there is an apology, albeit a terrible, accusatory one, is because the people have demanded it. Without the community you can be guaranteed the suit wouldn't have been dropped.

There were 7 opportunities along the way to mitigate and attempt to repair what happened, and they chose aggression and intimidation over apologies. This type of man is no longer welcome in the industry, and the sooner they realize it the better. I hope this event helps move our industry to a more inclusive future.
