Some things to keep in mind before winter weather to help keep your natural stone in optimal condition.

As the temperature falls and the chances of snow increase here are some winter tips to keep in mind if you have natural stone incorporated into your landscape.

Use of a plastic shovel is the most appropriate way of removing snow from natural stone. Use of a metal shovel can scrape and damage the surface of the stone or leave behind small remnants of steel that could turn rusty. Similarly, use of snow blowers that have a plastic shoe instead of a metal shoe is recommended.

The use of salt is not recommended as it has various disadvantages. Firstly, salt can cause discolouration as it acts as a bleach. This can result in coloured spots throughout the surface of the stone.

Secondly, salt when mixed with melted snow and ice creates a brine that may permeate the stone and the joints and slowly corrode these materials.

The safest method to ensure safety without adversely affecting the stone is to first remove as much snow as possible with a plastic shovel, then use either untreated sand or kitty litter. This provides grip during winter months and in the spring, a nice soil amendment when swept into the garden.

Screened topsoil, triple mix and compost are currently still available for pick-up or delivery. However, as the wet autumn weather increases, it may interfere with our ability to mix and screen the soil. While we do have a stockpile screened already, wet weather will hinder us from replenishing the stockpile. So, if you are in need of these products before the season ends, we suggest getting them sooner rather than later to avoid the disappointment of a product being unavailable.
