It's Forestry Fact Friday, and we've got a good one for you.... Did you know that wood insulates 15x better than concrete and 400x better than steel! 😮

Not only is wood a more sustainable building choice in terms of carbon capture and release as well as renewability, it's also more efficient for conserving heat and cold. 😊

At Conifex, we believe in preserving the forests that support our industry. Long term success requires a careful management of resources, and we take our role as stewards seriously. Towards that end, we accept third party auditing of our forestry activities, actively pursue sustainable forestry certifications and education, and put measures in place to protect water resources, biodiversity, and forest health.🌲

One of the best ways to protect your home from wildfires? Make sure there isn't much to burn. Proper yard management can help reduce your wildfire risk. That includes,

➔ Piling any yard waste, fire wood, or other flammable material away from buildings.
➔ Pruning tree branches away from your roof.
➔ Keeping a tidy lawn. Long grass speeds up the spread of wildfires.
➔ Choosing less flammable plants for your gardens.

Happy Friday! In honour of the end of the week, we have a fun forestry fact for you.

Did you know... a Douglas-fir isn't an actual fir tree? It's its own genus: Pseudotsuga. That's actually why we hyphenate Douglas-fir nowadays - to distinguish it from the real fir trees. In truth, it's much more like a pine tree than a fir. It's also one of the most common trees found in BC, and a great option for building material.

Today is !🌎 We do a lot of work to protect biodiversity in the forests we manage, but conservation is a group effort, and there are always ways to help on a smaller scale too. So in honour of the day, here are a few ways you can help preserve the Earth's natural resources and biodiversity too...

➔ Grow a wildlife-friendly garden.
Native-plants, peat-free compost, and keeping predators (like Mr Fluffy 🐈) out of the yard at night.

➔ Be a conscious consumer.
Where possible, avoid plastic packaging, try to buy locally grown produce, and eat less meat. If you're a fan of fish, stick to sustainable sources.

➔ Consider donating or volunteering.
If you can, consider donating to wildlife conservation efforts. You can also volunteer for any number of conservation efforts including ones for removing invasive weeds, planting biodiverse flora, and cleaning up natural habitats.

Support land conservation across Canada. Explore all the ways you can help protect Canada's natural spaces for future generations.

Your house is probably SPF. ☀️ SPF lumber that is.... 😉

SPF in the lumber industry stands for Spruce Pine Fir. 🌲 They are the three types of softwood used most often in the construction industry (and the lumber that BC is famous for producing).

In fact, BC SPF lumber is widely regarded as the best structural framing lumber in the world, and we produce a lot of it, right here in Mackenzie, BC.
