Ever wonder what those roof pitch numbers actually mean? 🤔
Turns out it’s way simpler than it sounds. A roof pitch is just how much your roof rises for every 12 inches it runs. So a 4/12 pitch means it rises 4 inches over a foot… a 6/12 rises 6 inches… and an 8/12 pitch? That’s the one where you tighten your boots and say a quick prayer before you climb. 😅
Lower pitches are easier to walk, but steeper ones shed that Prince George snow like a champ. The pitch you choose changes everything from attic space to curb appeal to how your roof handles our wild northern weather.

Some roofs deserve a second look! 🏛️💚

If a roof starts to feel “soft” or looks like it’s dipping in spots… it’s trying to tell you something 😬
And usually, it comes down to what’s happening underneath the shingles.
Soft spots often mean the wood decking below has weakened — and around Northern BC, that’s most commonly caused by moisture.
Here’s what could be going on:
💧 Water damage
Leaks from missing shingles, worn flashing, or ice buildup can slowly soak into the wood. Over time, that moisture leads to rot and softening.
🌬️ Poor ventilation
When warm, moist air gets trapped in the attic, it creates condensation. That moisture settles into the roof structure and weakens it from the inside out.
🧊 Freeze/thaw cycles
Water gets in, freezes, expands, and breaks things down little by little. It doesn’t take long before the structure starts to give.
🪵 Aging materials
Roofs don’t last forever. If repairs have been put off, small issues can quietly turn into bigger structural concerns.
The key thing to know:
A soft spot isn’t just cosmetic.
It can mean:
⚠️ Hidden rot
⚠️ Ongoing leaks
⚠️ Structural weakening
And if left alone… it can turn into a much bigger (and more expensive) repair.
If you notice dips, uneven areas, or anything that doesn’t look quite right, it’s worth having it checked out early.
