Attic ventilation fans can be useful — but simply adding a fan isn’t automatically the answer. 🏠💨

Good attic ventilation is about balance.

Your attic needs a way for fresh air to enter, usually through soffit vents, and a way for warmer, moisture-laden air to escape higher on the roof. Depending on the home, that may involve ridge vents, roof vents, gable vents or a powered attic fan.

A properly designed system can help:

🌡️ Reduce excessive heat buildup in the attic
💧 Control moisture and condensation
🪵 Protect roof decking and insulation
🏠 Support the life of your roofing system
❄️ Reduce conditions that can contribute to ice damming during our northern winters

One important catch: a powerful fan without enough intake ventilation can actually create problems by pulling air from the house instead of from outside.

In other words, when it comes to attic ventilation, more isn’t always better — balanced is better.

Water always finds a way.
See that damage on the ceiling? Most homeowners assume the problem started there. In reality, water often enters the home long before you see the stain.
One of the most common causes is a clogged or failing gutter system. When water can't flow away from your home properly, it can back up behind the gutters, get into the soffit, and eventually make its way inside.
By the time you see the damage, the problem has already been there for a while.
That's why I always say: don't wait for the warning signs. Prevent them.

Shane Michaud has been roofing in Prince George since 2008. Over the years, he worked his way up through three of the city's major roofing companies, starting as a labourer, becoming a shingler, then a crew boss. Do you know what soffit is… or is it one of those “sounds important but not totally sure” parts of a house? 😄
It’s not flashy. It’s not something you point out to guests. But your soffit is quietly doing a lot of heavy lifting up there.
Here’s why it matters more than people think:
1. Ventilation
Your soffit sits under the edge of your roof and helps your attic breathe. Without proper airflow, heat gets trapped up there in the summer and turns your attic into a sauna. That kind of heat can cook your shingles from the inside out.
In winter, poor ventilation can lead to ice dams… which is just a fancy way of saying “water going places it definitely shouldn’t.”
2. Aesthetics
Soffit covers the exposed rafters and gives your roofline that clean, finished look. Without it, things start looking a little… unfinished. Like a job that got 90% done and then someone said “good enough.”
3. Protection
It acts like a shield for the underside of your roof, keeping out moisture, critters, and all the things that love dark, damp spaces.
No soffit (or damaged soffit) can mean mold, rot, and uninvited guests moving in rent-free.
So yeah… soffit might not be the star of the show, but if it fails, you’ll definitely notice the consequences.
Kind of like the goalie of your house… you only really think about it when something gets past it 😅
