Some landmarks become so familiar that we rarely stop to consider the history behind them.

Red Deer's CPR pedestrian bridge is one of those places. For generations, it has connected more than two sides of the river. It has been part of the city's changing landscape, from its railway beginnings to the walking trails residents enjoy today.

Preserving historic infrastructure is rarely the easiest or least expensive option. It takes careful planning, skilled tradespeople and a community that recognizes the value of history.

The restoration is a reminder that progress doesn't always mean replacing the old with something new. Sometimes, it means finding a way to make what's already there last as long as possible.

Halloween decorating has changed over the years.

It used to be a few pumpkins on the front step, maybe some cobwebs in the windows, and that was about it.

Now you drive through neighbourhoods in Red Deer and see giant skeletons, inflatable decorations, lights everywhere, and some pretty crazy front yards.

Christmas still takes the top spot in decorating budgets, but Halloween is becoming a pretty big production in its own right.

And you've gotta wonder where everyone stores all this stuff for the other 11 months of the year.

Sylvan Lake is known across Alberta for summer weekends, the beach, and lake life.

But its impact goes far beyond a warm Saturday in July.

In 2024, Sylvan Lake welcomed approximately 670,700 visitors, who contributed an estimated $67.4 million in visitor spending. Around 65% of that spending came from overnight visitors, while the community itself grew 13.4% over the past five years.

It is a reminder that Sylvan Lake is not only one of Central Alberta’s favourite summer destinations but also a growing, year-round community with a regional footprint that extends well beyond its 15km lake.
