Did you know that April 28th was a day officially designated by the Canadian Labour Congress as National Day of Mourning? I did not. Until I noticed this at work. It is in remembrance of the thousands of Canadian workers who have lost their lives as a result of a work related injury or illness.
The following (long, but please read) poem was written by OH & S officer David Sturge of Newfoundland. Please, with the Christmas season upon us, remember what matters most.
"Hug and Kiss My Girls"
I left in a hurry for work today
ten minutes late or more
No time to hug and kiss my girls
And rushed out through the door
When I arrived the crew was prepped
with their safety harnesses on
Where we had planned to work today,
few had ever gone
This job was nothing new for me
Several metres from the floor
I wish I'd known on my way up
What my future had in store
As I shuffled my way across thebeams
With my hook still in my hand
I fell toward my destiny
That's when the end began
Always rushed to do the job
No time to second guess
Time was not an issue now
As I gasped my final breaths
Sudden horror facing me
Workers' screaming turned to crying
I couldn't speak, I couldn't move
I knew that I was dying
I'm not a worker, I'm a dad
A husband with a life
Not ready yet to leave this earth
Nor my dreams, my kinds my wife
My friends and workers listen near
my fading words are true
"Safety" isn't just a word
It's something you must do
As you bury me, forget me not
Nor the dangers of this world
And one last thing I ask from you
Is Please Hug and Kiss My Girls
