Somewhere today, a family is crowding into a kitchen you worked on.

To the designers, dealers and contractors who send us projects, and to the team on our floor who builds every cabinet: thank you. Most of the work behind a kitchen never shows up in the finished photo, and the kitchen doesn’t work without it.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at D3.

RTA. Semi-custom. Custom.

Your client has heard all three. Fewer people can actually explain what separates them.

Here’s the short version.

RTA is a shipping method, not a quality grade. Fixed sizes, flat-packed, assembled on site. Fast, but limited to what’s in stock.

Semi-custom gives you more flexibility — more sizes, more finishes, typically arrives assembled. But it’s still a system with boundaries.

Fully custom means the catalogue doesn’t exist. Every dimension is decided by the job.

None of these is automatically better. The right answer depends on what the space actually needs and what the project calls for.

Five year manufacturing warranty. Lifetime warranty on hardware.

That’s the answer to the warranty question at D3.

But the line Sam adds at the end is the one worth paying attention to.

“Very, very few warranty claims.”

A warranty only matters as much as how rarely you need it. That last line tells you more about the quality of what gets built here than the terms do.

Full answer in the video.

Meet JP de Villiers, Operations Manager.

Four years ago he started in the paint shop. Now he runs the whole floor, and he’ll tell you straight, his customers aren’t outside the building, they’re his own team.

When the paint shop hit an issue with micro bubbles in the finish, JP brought in a specialist, fixed it in an afternoon, and documented it so it never costs anyone that time again.

Ask him what he’s proud of and it’s not a machine. It’s the attention to detail, every cabinet checked, nick by nick, all the way through.

That’s the floor JP runs.

There’s a principle in lean manufacturing called tsukurikomi.

The person next to you is also your customer.

At D3 it means the person cutting the panel is accountable to the person edgebanding it. The person edgebanding it is accountable to the person assembling it. All the way to the person wrapping it before it ships.

Nobody passes a problem forward. Because the next station is your customer too.

We take care of this team because we believe good things come from that. The culture, the work, the standard that arrives on your job site. It all starts here with these people.

Grateful for every one of them.

Every cabinet that leaves this shop passed through someone’s hands. Cut, sanded, assembled, checked, packed. Every single one of those steps is a person, not a machine running itself.

Today’s for them. Every station, every shift, every day nobody’s watching.

Happy Labour Day, from all of us at D3. 🇨🇦

Call it premium if you want. We just call it the standard.
We just never skipped anything, and this is what that looks like.

Checked before it moves forward, any scratch stops it there. A full 1mm of edge banding. Doweled joints, not stapled, so every corner stays square. No filled nail holes anywhere on the box. Blum slides that close the same way on day one and year ten. A full 5/8 plywood bottom that was never going to sag.

Before a panel ever sees paint, it gets sanded by hand. Not because the machine can’t do it, because a hand feels what a machine can’t see. A high spot, a rough edge, a spot that would catch light wrong once it’s sitting in your client’s kitchen.

Every panel gets checked against its position before it moves forward, numbered, tracked, matched to where it’s actually going. So when it shows up on your job site, it’s still the exact piece that was meant for that spot.

Who says a cabinet shop can’t have a little character? We just make sure the joke still makes the point. Screw depth has a right answer, and now nobody on this floor forgets it.

Every tool on this cart has a spot. Every spot has a label. It looks like a small thing, a well-organized cart, but it’s part of why nobody’s standing around hunting for a clamp mid-build. That’s what lean actually looks like day to day. Not a poster on a wall, a cart that saves two minutes fifty times a day.

Setting a glass panel into a wood frame isn’t a snap-in job. The frame gets set, the insert gets seated, and someone checks the reveal is even all the way around before it leaves the table. That last part is the part that actually shows.

Most companies will take any business they can get.

Sam’s video does the opposite.

No homeowner clients. No designers on staff, no installers, no project managers. Purely B2B. Dealers, designers, and renovation contractors. That’s the whole model.

On multifamily, yes, but under 30 units. Above that, it ties up production capacity D3 keeps reserved for its regular trade partners.

That last part is the one worth paying attention to. Saying no to big volume jobs isn’t a limitation. It’s D3 protecting the capacity it owes to the people already working with them.

If you’re a designer, dealer, or contractor, this one’s for you. 🎥
