Obituary – Donald Kutny
August 23, 1938 – October 11, 2021
Don was born the 7th son and 8th of 9 children to newly immigrated Ukrainian parents Walter and Anna Kutny in Beaverdam, AB. Don was a loving and devoted husband to Nina, father to Derrick (Judy), Mike (Tracey), Rebecca (Richard) and Matt (Jane), grandpa to Tressa, Kevin, Trevor, David, Tylor, Cody, Stephanie and Ian. He was also doting Great (Jube-Jube) Grandpa to Michelle, Cole, Tyler, Kyle, Rylee, Madeleine, Danielle and Luka.
He will be lovingly remembered by his remaining siblings Bill (Kay), Peter (Virginia), Mike (Edyth), Victor and Mary, sister-in-laws Maria (Peter), Luda (Bill), Nida, Oksana (Daniel), brother-in-law Peter (Vira) and many nieces and nephews.
Don was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy, sister Tecla and brothers Nick and John.
Don passed while doing one of the things he loved most, hunting. He had always wanted to be taken home to be with his Lord while out in the wilderness and not be a burden to anyone. Well, God answered that prayer and gathered Don to be with Him in the twinkling of an eye.
Don was a devout lover of Jesus and gave generously of himself to everyone in his life as Christ compelled him. He was an active member of the Pentecostal churches in the Vancouver area and was instrumental in building the Richmond Pentecostal Church – the final church he called home.
Don and Dorothy moved to Vancouver from Edmonton in 1960. Don was a hardworking, creative landscaper in the Vancouver area during the 1960s and 70s. During these years Don landscaped many homes throughout Vancouver and most notably the Roger’s family mansion on Granville Street. Don loved rhododendrons and planted thousands of them around Vancouver during these years. If you see a very mature rhodo in Vancouver, chances are Don planted it!
After living in Vancouver for four years, Don and family moved to Richmond where farmland was more plentiful. As Don was perfecting a quality blend of topsoil for his landscaping contracts, more and more landscapers were asking him where he got that stuff from. By the late 1970s Don started selling more topsoil than doing landscaping and before long a blooming topsoil business had taken root which continues to flourish under the skilled guidance of the next generations to this day. In the last few years Don’s position in the company was coffee-runner, so not only his family and friends, but also the regulars at Tim Hortons will greatly miss Don’s regular loving humour.
Although we all learned a heartbreaking lesson that even he is not invincible, Don left this world knowing where he was going and doing what he loved.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Richmond Pentecostal Church on Friday, November 5th at 2:00pm. Don and his family kindly request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to ‘Great Commission Media Ministries’. https://gcmministries.ca/donate/
