Menelaws Contracting Joel Menelaws Red Seal Certified Carpenter. Specializing in Custom Homes, Renovations, and General Contracting in the Kootenays

10/16/2026

It’s easy to focus on the demolition, framing, materials and finishes.

But behind every renovation is a family trusting us with the place they call home.

That is why the details matter. The communication matters. The way the work is handled from beginning to end matters.

Because the goal is not simply to complete a renovation. It is to create a home that works better for the people living in it.

That’s the whole point.

There has been plenty happening at our Kootenay Lake build since our last update.

The crew has been working through the next stages of construction, and the project looks quite different from what we last shared.

There is still plenty of work ahead, but it is always rewarding to step back and see how far the build has come. We’ll be sharing a closer look at the progress soon.

A successful build starts long before the framing begins.

Excavation prepares the site for everything that follows, from creating access and managing drainage to establishing a solid starting point for construction.

It may be one of the earliest stages of a project, but the groundwork plays an important role in how the rest of the build comes together.

Building or renovating often comes with plenty of “what if” questions.

What if plans change? What if something unexpected comes up? What if you do not know where to begin?
Those questions are a normal part of the process. Talking through them early, understanding the options, and keeping communication clear throughout the project can make each decision feel more manageable.

You do not need to have everything figured out before the first conversation.

One of the first questions that comes up when planning a renovation is, “Can we stay in the house while the work is happening?”

The answer depends on the scope of the project, which areas of the home will be affected, and how the work will impact your day-to-day routine.

Some renovations can be completed while you remain at home. For larger projects, temporarily relocating may allow the work to move more efficiently.

There is no single answer that works for every renovation. Having this conversation early helps determine what makes the most sense for your home, your household, and the project ahead.

Building or renovating is not something most people decide overnight.

There are ideas to work through, timelines and budgets to consider, and plenty of details between the first conversation and the finished project.

If it’s something you’re considering this year, the first step is reaching out.
