A baby gate isn’t a replacement for a properly finished stair railing, but when you’re in the middle of a renovation, it can be a practical temporary solution.
If your stair railing isn’t finished yet, here’s what I’d keep in mind:
• Use a gate designed for the location. Not every baby gate is suitable for the top of stairs.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some gates are specifically designed for stair use, while pressure-mounted gates may not be appropriate at the top of stairs.
• Make sure it’s securely installed. A gate that can shift, tip or be pushed out of place isn’t doing its job.
• Don’t use it as a substitute for a permanent guardrail. A proper railing and guard system is still required once the project is complete.
• Keep the area around the stairs clear. Toys, tools and materials can create additional hazards.
• Think of it as a temporary barrier, not a finished safety solution.
Renovations have enough surprises without adding a trip to the ER to the project schedule. Do the temporary setup properly, then finish the railing as soon as possible.
