Sod day is a good day.

Most hydrangeas never look like this. Here’s why:

The difference between a thin, barely blooming hydrangea and one that stops people in their tracks comes down to a few things most homeowners get wrong.

Pruning at the wrong time is the biggest one. Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood. Prune them in early spring before new growth starts. Cut them in fall or summer and you’ve just removed next season’s blooms entirely.

Fertilizer is the second mistake. Too much nitrogen produces lush green leaves and almost no flowers. A balanced slow-release fertilizer with equal NPK applied once in spring is all it needs.

Water deeply and early. Hydrangeas want consistent moisture at the roots. Give them morning sun with afternoon shade. Full afternoon sun in an Ontario summer will stress the plant every single day.

Do those things consistently and this is what you get. It takes some time but the reward certainly will look like this one.
