Andrew Graham Woodworks

Andrew Graham Woodworks I build tables, chairs, islands, cabinets, and one of a kind boxes. I have also designed and built music stands and musical instruments.

I welcome a collaborative approach with clients, where intuition and the give-and-take exchange of ideas and impressions is expressed in the final work. One of my aims is to create works that will last generations. Nature is the best teacher, and wood is a beautiful challenge.

These pictures show the last stages of this project, an Italian harpsichord that will express the music of some three centuries. Following the principles of the sound and physics, like a recipe, we produce not only the tonal qualities that allow us to hear what music the composers were creating, but an instrument that displays in its structure the order and proportion of music itself.

This process shows the making of the registers, which will guide the jacks or plucking mechanisms in their vertical movement. Not as glamorous as the keyboard, but every bit as vital to the action.

This project started in late summer, to be finished this fall. It is exciting to revisit this model of harpsichord making with the insights and skills that I've developed since I started the first Italian harpsichord, back in 1994. It still comes with some head-scratching and deliberations over acoustics, physics, and aesthetic details which have to blend into a unified whole. Stay tuned for up-dates on my progress!

I hope that everyone enjoys the rich sounds of this instrument, the product of much technical meditation, patience, love of music, and an appreciation of all the myriad properties of wood and metal. Thanks to my wife Trish for support, to Tim Blackmore for goading toward the finish line and playing these fine examples, and to the NB Arts Board for the initial financial support.

This track is played on the upright harpsichord, built in 2015 by Andrew Graham, and uses the front 8' choir, sonorous and resonant. Played by Tim Blackmore of Saint John, NB.
