Weeds, overgrown plants, grass clippings and patio items can restrict airflow around the unit, forcing the system to work harder to cool your home. That can reduce efficiency and contribute to unnecessary wear on the equipment.

Window A/C units can only take you so far.

If you’re trying to keep a garage, workshop, sunroom, home addition or older house comfortable without existing ductwork, a ductless mini-split may be the better long-term solution.

Ductless systems provide efficient heating and cooling directly where you need it, helping maintain more consistent temperatures without the expense and disruption of adding traditional ductwork. Installation is relatively unobtrusive, and the indoor units take up far less window space than a portable or window A/C.

Noticing water around your furnace in the middle of summer? Your furnace may not be the problem.

As your air conditioner removes heat and humidity from your home, it also produces condensation. That water should travel safely away through a condensate drain. If the drain becomes clogged, cracked or disconnected, water can back up and collect around the furnace or indoor A/C equipment.

Other possible causes include:

A dirty filter restricting airflow
A frozen evaporator coil that is beginning to thaw
A damaged drain pan
A malfunctioning condensate pump

Don’t ignore the puddle. Even a small amount of water can damage flooring, contribute to mould growth or reach nearby electrical components.

If you notice water near your furnace, turn off the cooling system and have the source investigated.
