One of the most common questions we get from people looking at building a new pool is, “What’s it going to cost?”

Pricing is largely based on square footage, but there are two features that affect the price significantly:
1. Auto-Cover/Safety Cover
2. Vinyl Over Steel (VOS) Steps

For a smaller pool around 14x28, you’re generally looking somewhere in the $100,000-$135,000 range, depending on the options you choose.

Every project is a little different. Sometimes the best thing we can do is come take a look at your yard, see what we’re working with, hear what you want, and put together an custom quote from there.

If you’re thinking about getting a pool, my best advice is to plan well in advance and take the time to consider your options and the features you want.

We want to build something you’ll be able to enjoy for decades to come. If you’re unsure or have questions during the planning process, we’re here to help weigh your options.

Watch until the end to see the transformation. Last week we wrapped up the Thode project. This video shows us putting down the vermiculite pool pad, then coming back the next day to install the liner.

There’s still some work to be done around the pool, but the pool itself is now complete.

Here’s a look into what happens before we install a new liner. When we take an old liner out, we don’t just rip it out and throw it in a pile. We try to keep it contained, fold it up as flat as we can, and then use the liner bead to tie it together.

The liner bead is the top part of the liner that hooks into the steel wall, and it works pretty good as a rope to bundle everything together. It’s kind of like breaking down a cardboard box before you put it in the recycling. It saves space, keeps cleanup easier, and helps when it’s time to haul it away.

DISCLAIMER: This is mainly directed at non-customers who are buying pool parts online and doing the work themselves. If you’re one of our customers, I’m always willing to help and answer questions.

Any homeowner can build a pool themselves and do it cheaper than hiring a pool company. You can buy parts online, do your own repairs, and save some money. I don’t have a problem with that.

But if you’re buying your parts somewhere else, doing the work yourself, and you’re not one of our customers, with all due respect, don’t call me expecting me to walk you through it or troubleshoot it for free when something goes wrong. If you do need our help, it’s not gonna take priority over our existing customers.

Last week we dug our 7th pool of the summer. This one has had a few challenges with limited access, some extra cleanup, and less-than-ideal soil conditions. But we’ve got everything cleaned up and ready for the rest of the build, and things are starting to come together.

Since this video, we’ve shaped the pool and put up the steel walls.

Pool pad day on the Greenbryre build. We had to push it back because of a little rain, but it ended up being a really nice day for it. A little overcast, a bit windy, but no direct sunlight and no extreme heat, so it should go down pretty nice.

We had some compromised soil conditions here, so we did the famous, as the internet and social media have told me, two-stage bottom. Rock on the bottom with grout over top.

We didn’t have standing water when we dug it, but the water was pretty close. So we put a weeping tile system in the overdig, and also a sleeve and bucket at the bottom so we can pump out from underneath the pool if we ever get water under there.

This is a 20x40 pool, and the pool pad took about 12–14 mixes of grout.

Next up was liner install.

Another new pool build underway in Greenbryre. We built pools for both of their next-door neighbours last summer, and now it’s their turn.

Pool 302 in Nutana went through a few different design ideas before we landed on their final dream pool. We looked at different step configurations, depths, and how the family wanted to use the pool so we could make the space work best for them.

We ended up with a bigger lounger, rounded corners instead of the 45-degree cut-offs we’ve done on some other builds, and a slightly shallower pool overall. The deepest portion is only about 3 feet long, with a longer transition ramp, which gives them more usable space to stand, hang out, and play games.

Then there was the yard itself. We had power and gas lines to work around, the meter was too close to the pool, there was a gigantic tree in the corner, and they’re also putting an addition on the house. So there were a lot of moving parts to consider when figuring out exactly how this pool was going to fit.

There’s still a ways to go on this one. It’ll probably be a while yet before the pool is fully up and circulating and the concrete pool deck is finished, especially with the home addition still being built.

That’s a big part of building a custom pool. We work with you through the design to make sure it fits your yard, your family, and how you plan to use the pool.

The safety warnings on pool filters are there for a reason.

Before opening up a filter, turn the heater off and allow it to cool down according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then shut the pump off, open the air relief valve on top of the filter, and make sure all the pressure is completely released and the gauge is back at zero.

Only then should you be taking the clamp off and opening the filter.

In reality, there should never be that much pressure built up in the filter. The main way that could happen is if there’s a valve after the filter that’s shut off. But regardless, if there is pressure in the tank and you crack the clamp open, that pressure has to go somewhere.

Always follow the instructions for your specific pool equipment. And if you’re not sure what you’re doing, don’t guess.

Liner day on the 302 Build. This is a new liner pattern from Megna Pools called Santorini. It has gold flakes throughout that glimmer in the light.

This pool has a 16-foot-wide bench across the deep end. Then in the shallow end, there’s a 10-foot by 6-foot-8 sun ledge with a 6-foot vinyl-over step.

They decided to round the corners instead of keeping them square, which gives the pool a little bit more character.
