I have always said the aluminum wire is completely safe if it is properly maintained. Aluminum oxidizes or shrinks over time and connections can become loose and lose connectivity. This creates heat when the circuit is under load.

These connections should be periodically checked by a professional to ensure good connections at every outlet.

In modern times we pigtail the aluminum with copper wire, special connectors for aluminum to copper joints and an anti oxidizing compound to protect the aluminum from air which prevents the breakdown of the aluminum conductor.
