Do you compost? ๐โโ๏ธ
Do you compost but are not sure why you do it? ๐คทโโ๏ธ
It may seem like a lot of work, but in reality, it is not very difficult to do! There are different methods of composting, but they all involve five basic components โ brown material, green material, oxygen, water and microbes (from soil or finished compost).
๐ Brown material can be dead leaves, sawdust, shredded wood, or paper products. About half of your material added should be brown material, which is high in carbon.
๐ฟ๐๐ฅฆ Green material can be fruit and veggie scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds, or plant trimmings. About half of your material added should be green material, which is high in nitrogen.
โ Do not add meat or dairy products, fats or oils as these take a very long time to break down, and will create bad odors that will attract pests and animals. Additionally, do not add grass clippings from lawn that has been treated with herbicides. โ
Composting is the natural process of breaking food waste down to its organic components. These components can then be taken up by plants as a source of nutrients which are required for plant growth. Composting is a great way to make use of the food waste that would otherwise be thrown into the landfill, taking up space there and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions as they decompose.
When composting is done properly it shouldnโt stink, it wonโt attract pests, and it wonโt contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. You will be reducing the amount of trash you have to dispose of, while creating the perfect fertilizer for your flowers, garden, and new trees!
