As we move into spring, gravel roads often get rougher before they get better. This happens because the top layer of the road has thawed, while the ground underneath remains frozen.

Water from snowmelt and rain cannot drain through the frozen base, leaving the surface soft and muddy. Grading too early can break the frozen layer below, causing equipment to sink and making road conditions worse.

What we’re doing:
👉 Roads are monitored daily for safety
👉 Urgent issues receive targeted spot repairs where conditions allow
👉 Full grading will begin once the ground has fully thawed and gravel can properly compact

Thank you for your patience as the ground dries out! 🙏 Learn more about spring thaw conditions and road maintenance: www.parklandcounty.com/springthaw

PLAN AHEAD: ROAD BANS ARE COMING SOON!
A friendly reminder that Spring thaw is just around the corner! Each year, around this time, the County implements road bans by placing weight restrictions on all roadways.

Road bans help protect our infrastructure by minimizing damage caused by heavy traffic during the thawing period. As frost leaves the ground, roadways retain higher moisture levels, reducing their load-bearing capacity. When heavy vehicles travel on weakened roads, costly repairs—funded by taxpayer dollars—become necessary. By enforcing weight restrictions, we help reduce both the financial and time burden of these repairs.

If you have significant hauling to complete, now is the time to do so before road bans take effect.

Road bans are coming into effect soon. 🚚🚫 As spring continues and frost leaves the ground, roads become more vulnerable to damage. To help protect County roads, seasonal road bans will come into effect at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7.

Once in place, all oiled and hard surface roads in the County will be restricted, with most having an axle weight limit of 75%, and some restricted to 50%.
